She was in OK shape, when it was docked at TNG Veracruz it was either to be sold and docked, or towed for scrap. she had a lot of steel work done there to get up to par. The also did a change from ABS to LR, so during that process both societies have to 'sign off and sign on' to certain inspections. Overall the steel was in decent shape, mechanical was OK, they had some issues sailing it up here. There was a Chief, first mate, and a cadet on board during the docking all previously sailed canadian fleets. It was rough with limited supplies and resources, but Im sure its in good running shape now under LLT ownership.

Back to the original question: Because of her value to her previous owners as a Jones Act compliant vessel and considering the very high cost of replacement, it is likely she was kept in relatively good condition.

But can a Canadian Boat be brought back to sail for an American fleet?even though they comply?

Ok, so it had since been re-flagged Canadian, but was built by Lockheed in Seattle WA.

If she still complies with the jones act, could be reverted back to US registry? Maybe it was bought for the rare case that if one of the grand river boats were to suffer some major breakdown that could put on the wall for a long time, go to scrap, or sink (god forbid) that they would have a back-up boat?

Tecumseh was built on the west coast and does comply with the Jones Act.

Most saltwater ships are considered to be at the end of their useful lives at age 30. Ready for Scrap, use as a Museum Ship, or Sinking as an artificial reef. When LLT bought the Salty MV. 'Tecumseh' she was almost Forty, long past the life-expectancy of most Salties. Why did they buy such an old ship? Obviously not to comply with the Jones Act (as a straight-decker, she mainly trades at Canadian Ports). Is she in unusually good shape? Is she a desperate stop-gap measure? What? Thanks for any assistance, as LLT's decision to purchase this ship has always mystified me.
