It is fitting to note that the steam powered vessel Cason J. Calloway is passing the steam blow. These are slowly disappearing now.

A steam whistle sound terrible when run on air and you would need a really big air compressor to supply the volume. There is an annual whistle blow called Whistles on the Water in St. Claire Michigan where a local person loans them a steam boiler (maybe a steam tractor) to blow a beautiful collection of steam whistles. These are very loud and hearing protection is advised.

Interesting. I walk by the Sundew once a week, but in going to the website, I see this Lilac is older. I wonder if a compressor could be hooked up to the whistle to test it, but it's probably more involved than that.

I had a nice little adventure yesterday. I helped transfer a 9" diameter beautiful steam whistle from the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc Wisconsin to the Lilac Preservation Project in New York City.
The Lilac is a retired Coast Guard Lighthouse Tender undergoing restoration. She is a beauty and oil fired steam powered.

I can't wait to hear that whistle when they finally steam her up (2 years approximately). By the way, they are always looking for volunteers to work on the ship.
