Re: Speer anchored or aground above the Soo?

I guess the wind must have blown water out of the river then?

Speer anchored or aground above the Soo?

Does anyone have any info on the Speer? A friend who is at the Soo, told me the Speer has run aground, in the northern part of Whitefish Bay, close to where the Blough ran aground a few years ago.

Re: L. Superior coming over doors

Darryl is correct. They can control how much water empties into the St. Mary's River at the locks. There are gates that regulate that flow. So most likely Superior would never be allowed to be high enough to overflow the gates at the locks.

Re: Which Ships Will Not Be Sailing in 2017

The Algoway will be sailing this year, at least according to their Facebook page. The crew is supposed to report in less than two weeks. The engine room crew is already on board, getting her ready.

Thanks for the story Capt. Metz. Last summer my wife and I visited the museum that holds the Chrysler. Interesting!

Cornelia?

I've noticed the Cornelia has been on the hook for a week or more outside of Duluth Harbor. Have I missed something? I know last year she was being held there due to some violation of some type. Is she just waiting on further shipping orders? Sorry if this has been discussed previously, if so I ...

Re: Duluth entry storm nightmare

I was there early that morning. We were staying at the South Pier Inn. I didn't see the ship coming in. We were awakened by the wind slamming the rain against the window of our room. I have never seen a thunderstorm that severe in my life and I'm 69 years old, a life long resident of Indiana, so I ...

Re: Soo Locks

I would doubt they would open early. The down time is for regular maintenance and repairs on the lock system. Not sure the ice, or lack of it, has much to do with the opening.

Great Story Cap, as usual! By the way, I was able to find a copy of your book, "Sea Stories." I enjoyed reading it immensely! I wish more Captains would relate their stories of shipping on the Great Lakes. Thank you for writing it.

Ship watching spots near Port Huron

What areas are good for ship watching in the Port Huron/Sarnia area? I need to stay on the US side of the river. We don't have passports. The wife and I have been thinking of driving up there for a couple of days after Christmas.

Re: Lakes Tour in September

I'd like to do a similar trip. We plan to start at the Soo and head to Duluth, traveling as close to the big lake as we can on the way. I'll be interested to hear how your trip went, where you stopped, etc. We won't be doing that until next year.
