Re: Fitzgerald Storm
It has always irritated me how McSorely seems to always receive criticism for being a "heavy weather skipper" and how this is often implied as he took unnecessary risks with his vessel. Shipping has changed quite a bit since the Fitzgerald sinking (primarily due to the decreased demand an...

Re: Roger blough activity
You picked a good time to get out. Nearly 40 years ago, during early 1980s, while beginning high school I was hoping to have a future career in the Great Lakes shipping industry. Obviously, things got so bad during that timeframe that I soon realized that this was unlikely to happen. The cost of go...

He or She
I sailed on 8 freighters and would never refer to any of them as a she. Its a he. Definitely. Everything about a freighter is a he.
Now that beautiful cruise ship on the lakes is definitely a she.
Sorry, it makes me cringe everytime I see a freighter referred to as a she.

Re: Arthur B Homer
I'd second what Duluth Guest said. Though I'm not an expert and am just a fairly young casual boatwatcher, to think that the Fitzgerald's problems that she had with her keel had to do with the sinking are likely people making mountains out of molehills. The reason I have serious doubts about the Fi...

Re: Thousand Footer Cargo Holds
Shaking the chains was a little bit of a workout. You climb down deep into the cargo hold and start shaking the unwanted cargo out. Using the chain you swing sideways to the next chain. Lots of fun.

Sailor board
Having a board for past and current sailors to post would be a good idea.
Just a thought.

Re: Employment age
They ditched the 3rd deckhand 20 years ago. If this is something you want to do, jump on it. Things havent changed much here either. 20 years ago the people here "in the know" told me I wouldn't get a boat because the jobs weren't there. Road apples! I never once had a problem getting a sh...

Re: Update from Denny
Denny, more than anything I would love to be at the river where I first fell in love with the freighters. Instead, I'm stuck in the desert wishing and hoping I can be there. In the meantime I have your update here to bring back those joyous memories. Now, I'm stuck in my room hiding from the plague ...

Re: Maumee Conversion
I'm a Merchant Marine about to board the Maumee in a couple days. Before I board any new vessel I like to get a rundown of the ships history. I see that not too long ago the Maumee was converted to a self unloading barge. But why? Barge is married up to the tug Victory. Good Captain and a even bett...

I've never loaded there on a footer. I was just shocked it would take 20 hours to load one there. I'm guessing they don't load there often.
