Frontenac
I see according to Marine Traffic that FRONTENAC is upbound on Lake Erie (evening of Jan 25) headed for Windsor. Going for salt? Some time ago, I saw that WHITEFISH BAY was supposed to haul salt out Windsor, but then she "suddenly" appeared to go into layup a week ago. Anyone know what's up? Thanks ...

2025-26 Winter Lay-up
Just thot I'd put this blog together so we can all see where so-and-so is laying up and let everyone know what the latest scuttlebutt might be. Last I heard (22 Dec), ATLANTIC HURON is downbound on Lake Superior with a load of ore pellets for Quebec City. Then, she's apparently going to the boneyard ...

Re: Ships that Survived Major Accidents to Sail Again
Another candidate for suffering a major accident and sailing again was the Donnacona of Canada Steamship Lines in 1964. The Donnacona was built by the Western Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Co. of Port Arthur, Ontario, and launched as W. Grant Morden on April 14, 1914. CSL was less than a year old when the ...

Re: American Spirit Near Allision at Port Huron 5-27-2025
I was able to view two videos of the event. Having sailed on the Great Lakes myself, it looked to me like, for some reason, steering headway was momentarily lost. This may have resulted in the rudder shifting back uncontrollably toward a midship position, causing the turn to widen and straighten out ...

Re: Tug Jimmy L.
Keep in mind that the Jimmy L. Is a G-tug herself as Great Lakes Towing purchased Sarter Marine Towing three years ago. The William C. Gaynor towed the Minnesota and New Jersey from Cleveland to Detroit last week. Then the Jimmy L. came to Detroit to pick up the New Jersey and Nebraska to take ...

Tug Jimmy L.
I see the tug Jimmy L is taking former (?) Great Lakes Towing tugs somewhere. The AIS on the Jimmy L says :Burns Harbor". First, which tugs are being towed by the Jimmy L, and two, where might the GLT Co. tugs be going and why?

Re: Sailings March 2025
Sorry, Andy. That's a new one for me. Perhaps Denny or someone else has heard something.algowest wrote: April 27, 2025, 4:19 pm Good afternoon,
Curious about McAsphalt Advantage, entered winter layup in Montreal. Believe this was after a minor fire in forward void space in Hamilton? Anyone hear about her?
Thanks in advance!
Andy

Speaking on behalf of the 7000 plus viewers of this topic, many thanks for your time and input. I may be mistaken, but I believe your reporting on spring sailings this year was one of the best and most detailed, to date. Again, thank you so much.

Re: Sailings March 2025
Does anyone have any idea why the Saginaw and Calumet are still in layup? Lack of cargoes? Also, does anyone know what the situation is regarding the Oakglen and Tim Dool? Finished? I wonder if the Tim Dool has been sold to Goderich Elevator for grain storage? Back in the 60s and 70s, Goderich ...

Re: Casino Boats in Sarnia
Am I blind or something, but does anyone know what happen to one of the casino boats in Sarnia? I mean, the one that was in the north slip may be tied up now at the government dock and the other that was docked down around the stone docks above the oil docks appears to be gone, altogether! Maybe the ...

Re: Tug question
Coincidence. The Wilf Seymour came from winter layup in Port Maitland with her barge destined for Windsor. My guess is that it will load grain and head east and then pick up aluminum for the trip back into the lakes as it usually does.
Good point, Guest. I see it's at the ADM in Windsor. Your ...

Re: Superstitions
Well my friend ashland69 you may be correct on all of your facts, comments and information about the Friday sailing stuff! However I have my own theory and my own superstitions. In 33 years of going out to see and photograph the ships on the St. Clair River, whenever I start up on a Friday I then ...
