As with her sister ship, Milwaukee (sunk with all hands 1929) flooding occurred in the flicker (on these ferries, the very aft compartment), the engine room crew quarters. No one has been able to determine the cause of the leak. It is speculated that eventually the car deck flooded up to the coal h...

Re: ss grand haven

After Castro took over Cuba, ferry service from Florida ended. The Grand Haven was sold and came back thru the St Lawrence to run steel coils from Cleveland to Port Burwell and Port Stanley in 1965. Due to issues in Canada she only made a few trips and was laid up, eventually being sold for scrap in...

Not enough work, especially being limited to one dock the way she is. Her fitout has been pushed out a couple of times now. There is a real possibility she may not sail at all this year.

Re: Badger over-nighter ?

Their schedule shows that they will be doing nighttime sailings from June 10 to Sept 5 this year. But during that time frame most rooms are booked by the general public and would not be available for a group function. The Boatnerd Badger gatherings have in the past been done outside of that window,...

Pilothouse electronics would have been destroyed by the fire. I imagine the boom would have been warped by the heat from the belts burning. Not much may be salvageable in the after end due to fire and heat damage.

As in the Derbyshire incident, the true facts would end the controversy.. What true facts are you talking about? The true (unknown) facts of what actually happened instead of the yearly assumptions and guessed theories that people keep insisting on endlessly going on about year after year after year.

Re: heddle drydock

I don't mean to be picky, but as I understand it the "uniflow" is a type of steam engine. Skinner's own version was the "Unaflow" [with a capital U and a letter "a"]. So it is quite correct to call the engine a uniflow, but when calling it a Skinner, it could also be c...
