Re: Soo Locks closing extended?
The relevant regulation actually states"...(2) Closing date. The locks will be maintained in operation only for the passage of down bound vessels departing from a Lake Superior port before midnight (2400 hours) of January 14, and of upbound vessels passing Detour before midnight (2400 hours) of ...

Songs at Cap Charles
Whenever we pass Cap Charles in Quebec we are given a full salute by the visitor's center. We are always treated to the national anthem followed by another fanfare. I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what the name of the song is (I've heard it elsewhere but I can't quite place it).

Re: Lake Erie boat routes?
On the Great Lakes there are Lakes Carrier Association recommended routes overlaid on charts.
Nothing says a boat must follow these, but they are often used as guidelines.
Here is a link for Western Lake Erie:

The Visitors Center at Lock 3 has a well established viewing platform. Other popular spots where I see a lot of gawkers are at Lock 7 and above Lock 2. There are other opportunities around Lock 8 as well.

This year during one trip up the Welland Canal on the Baie St Paul we met a much smaller US Coast Guard boat taking far more of the channel than was really necessary. As a subtle jab we gave one short on the whistle... (the signal was returned ;p)

Re: Guest (Passenger) Quarters on New Ships.
Just confirming that Trillium has no special "passenger" cabin. Extra cabins are available in case they are needed and these are similar to regular crew cabins (though some have bunks rather than a single bed). Also, there is an "owner's" cabin that is similar to an "officer's" cabin in size and ...

Re: Ore Movements from Ashtabula
I believe the same thing can be said not just for Ashtabula but also for Conneaut as well. They bring ore down from Minnesota and Wisconsin unload in Conneaut, reload it into a few CSL boats and then ship it to Quebec. From there the ore is then reloaded into larger ships for China more than likely ...

Re: Ore Movements from Ashtabula
Noticed lately that CSL vessels have been moving lots of cargo out of Ashtabula to Quebec City. What is it exactly that they are loading in Ashtabula? Also are they loading the cargo at the Pinney Dock or at another dock? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Re: Seaway Deadline Questions
They've always been scheduled to allow ships through the lower Montreal-Lake Ontario Section after the Seaway officially "closes" on Christmas Eve until December 30th with "Special Written Permission" as per Seaway Notice #9. I think this is a fairly normal practice and is one that the shippers ...

I would be curious to know if the bridge has adequate heat/ac available? There is a lot of glass up there, the view must be spectacular!

She's currently unloading grain in Port Cartier - my understanding is that she'll slip across the port to load some ore after the Spruceglen departs.

I had a video too, but unfortunately it cuts out just before the salute. That forward whistle on the BSP has to be one of the loudest I've heard on the lakes!

She's just heading out of Lock 8 up the system now.

23 from Montreal to Quebec sounds a little high, though I agree with around 36 to Montreal from the piers. I thought it was closer to 16 hours between Montreal and Quebec.

Re: How Many Locks
That last post is a pretty complete answer; I'd just add that what it boils down to is that a ship traveling from Montreal to Lake Superior will go through a total of 16 locks - however, some of which she may sail right through without being raised (Iroquois and lock 8 in the canal).

Re: Escanaba Ore Docks
The docks are on the Northern end of the town. There is an access road that goes right to the docks and (if I recall correctly) gives you a decent view of the ships there.
