Re: my views on the Fitzgerald

Looking at this map at the Fitz's track line can anyone guess as to the Fitz's distance from 6 fathom shoal including the extra distance of the shoal as was discovered in the 1976 survey thanks?

Re: my views on the Fitzgerald

Capt. Cooper said the Fitzgerald was closer to the shoal then he wanted to be. A 23 foot spot marked on the chart is about 2.5 miles north of the Island, if he did run ground on 6 Fathom Shoal I think it might be on the 23 ft. spot. But I do not know for sure.

Thanks for reply Captain Metz. Would you have a guesstimate as to how close the Fitz's track line was to 6 fathom shoal?

Re: Fitzgerald Wreck Site

I would be hesitant to disregard the coast guard report and the NTSB. She very well could have not had hatch clamps on tight enough. All it takes is a one time mistake and a perfect chain reaction to go send a vessel to the bottom. A circumstance that is generally agreed to have happened with the ...

Re: Fitzgerald Wreck Site

The theory that loose hatch clamps was the cause of the Fitz's listing and taking on water and thus causing it's sinking was disproved in the Dive Detectives documentary. No way enough water could have entered partially clamped hatches to cause that bad of a list. And I doubt the Fitz was out in ...

Re: Fitzgerald Wreck Site

Fitzgerald wreck site image from drain the lakes. When you look at the wreck site from this perspective i would agree more than likely she broke up after the bow hit bottom as there really is not much distance between bow & stern.
