Re: Manistee Future
Manistee will likely be making an appearance in a mens shaving section rather than being refitted for service. Cutting her down to a barge might be an option for a deep pocketed company who wants to put the cash and effort into converting her, but I think her days as a self-propelled freighter are ...

Re: Photo Collection
Also there does not appear to be a towline from the bow of the Austin so is the Malcolm providing motive power while the steamer is being steered with its own rudder?

Re: Belle River and Monroe Power Plant retirements announced
The time for Buffalo as a grain transshipment port has come and gone unfortunately. It's far more economical to run a saltwater hull to Duluth/Thunder Bay and carry it to the ocean via the seaway than running the transshipment route if the grain is foreign-bound. Less handling, less cargo dwell time ...

Re: Belle River and Monroe Power Plant retirements announced
The end of coal will have a major impact on the 1000fters for sure, if not spell the end for the majority of them alltogether. There just isn't another commodity out there right now that could replace the tonnage needed to keep them operational profitably.

Re: Reuben Lasker Launch Damage
If you look closely, at roughly the 11 second mark, you can see persons on the dock get hit by the spray. There looks to be a scaffold with one person and a professional camera (or perhaps two people) on top if it really swaying after being hit.

Re: Buffalo Naval Park to ReOpen 12/26-1/5
Yeah I guess in the early to mid 80's her winter caretakers weren't taking much care of her and failed to notice some of her sea chests on the Port side were had either rusted through or had been forced into an open position by ice. When the morning crew came in she was in the process of rolling ...

Re: Obtaining nautical items when a laker is scrapped
I would guess your best bet is to contact the breaker directly and see if they are willing to sell anything. Two of the three main breakers in Brownsville actually advertise reclaimed materials from the ships they've broken up;

Re: Buffalo Naval Park to ReOpen 12/26-1/5
During the regular season the answer is usually no, or so I've been told. Reasons range from the areas being dangerous/unlit/filled with asbestos/mold to "the USN says the areas are off limits" to the fact that entire areas in the lower Stbd side are filled with concrete which was added after she ...

Re: AIS Ship Destination info
Thanks for the info - I can only guess that some system out there has the exact ETA/ETD info in it, and for a variety of reasons I'm sure its better the public doesnt know. It just struck me as a little strange to see it with such regularity.

Re: What is your favorite ship?
Being new to the area and not all that keen on the subject, I'd cast my hat in for the SS Meteor - I'm fascinated by the whaleback design and the fact she served so long.
As for an operational ship, I'd probably say the Cort, she's all modernized but still retains the classic laker design.

Question for those currently aboard or who have served aboard lakers -Seems like half to 3/4 of the time I check a ships destination on the AIS system, the POD is usually the last port of call and not the next. Why?

Re: Do Double Acting Ships have a future on the Lakes?
Another issues I noticed is that from what I can tell most, if not all, of these double acting ships are crude oil tankers. This observation leads to two conclusions; 1. The fact that all tankers now have to be double hulled probably helps with the operational characteristics of double acting ...

Do Double Acting Ships have a future on the Lakes?
Hello - I'm a new member to the boatnerd forum and recently moved from New York City to Buffalo. I'm slowing getting myself familiar with the ins and outs of Great Lakes shipping and have had a question for those more experienced and knowledgeable in the whys and why nots of Lake shipping:
