Re: SS United States

Good enough. I was going by what I saw (didn't see) on the satellite view on Google. It's odd that the ship not appear. BTW- I did find something interesting- Street view actually goes on board ship and goes around inside it. You can see what's left of her, even goes inside the bridge. If they thin...

I don't think it was moved. None of the SS United States pages on social media say anything about any move.

Re: Roger Blough is on fire in Sturgeon Bay

They were going to sail the blough this season but probably not now depending on the extent of the damages caused by the fire. Didn’t think there was any work going on on the ship as it’s been in layup since mid summer last year. They had planned to since the callaway needed a 5 year but now that t...

Re: Algoma Buffalo Drydocking

Has the Algoma Buffalo been placed in the drydock at Erie yet? If so, did she get a new paint job? Her coat of Algoma blue that she got over the summer is pretty disappointing. Local reports out of Erie had her going into dry dock immediately after arrival at DonJon in early January. She has since ...

Re: Record Long Term Lay Up

In keeping with the original poster's interest in ships that had been in long term layup and returned to service the book "The Inland Steel Fleet" has an appendix entry in which it shows the Edward L. Ryerson being placed into 3 long term layup periods between 1985 and 2006 during which t...

Re: Record Long Term Lay Up

So not talking barge conversions, it seems we have the J. J. Boland at 8 years and the Leon Fraser/Alpena at 9 years. Also of note, we had the Ryerson come back at 8 years as well (1998-2006).

Record Long Term Lay Up

Does anyone here know the record time in long term lay up of any lakers that eventually returned to service? I'm thinking possibly McKee Sons. Last operated in 1980, then returned as a barge in 1992, next up being the Joe Thompson at 11 years. If the plans for the Valor ever do come to be, I believe...

For now, ASC is still like it was with their previous owner, GATX. A separate entity.

Re: Winter Drydockings/layups

Erie will be expecting Mesabi Miner, Algoma Buffalo, Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder, Presque Isle and in early Spring, Algoma Compass. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to learn of an unannounced vessel as well as Don Jon has said on a press release that they will be working on 8 vessels over the course of ...

Re: Badger sold to Interlake

I'd say it's obvious that if anything were to happen and the Spartan were to be used again, it would have to be completely gutted and repowered, no possible way she would operate as is after being a parts store for the Badger for over 30 years. I would most likely expect to see it cut down to a dec...

Re: Cliffs acquire Central Marine?

Thanks Shipwater1 as I didn't think about that one as far checking out the Fleet History Galleries here on them. Thanks for the update. I believe there was also some variation of the Inland stack. Older photos of the Sykes and Ryerson show Inland spelled out across the diamond on the stacks, later ...

The tug had new engines installed around 2006, so aside from some obvious quirks that will be worked out since a major rebuild over the past year it is unlikely that tug is in rough shape.

Re: Cliffs acquire Central Marine?

Just curious is all but, anyone know just how many stack logos those three have had in their history the Sykes, Ryerson and Block? They have had more stack changes throughout their careers that I can’t keep up with those changes anymore. I can’t even figure out the years that they had them and chan...

Re: Fire on ship 70's.

Quite a while ago, I was in Copper Harbor, MI and managed to get close to a burning ship on Lake Superior. The aft superstructure acted like a big chimney and the crews quarters burned killing at least one crewman. This was a Canada vessel and I think a Patterson ship. Does anybody remember this fi...
