Back in those days you had three deckhands, a bos,n , watchman and a deckwatch and one man to each hatch so that no clamps were missed. On the boats I was on all clamps were on before we left the piers...

Wedges, Battens, strong backs, and tarps all part of the telescoping hatch nomenclature. Lots of bending over and long hours. Especially on a hatch farm - 12-foot centers.....

What I am referring to is the heavy cable they normally lower between the boat and the gates to keep the boat from hitting the gate if something goes wrong with the mooring lines. I have noticed they have not been lowering the boom holding the cable for either the down bound or up bound boats...

Harvest Spirt

The Harvest Spirit has been loading Steel coils at the Canadian Soo for the last few days. During much of this time there has been Hot work being done on her Port hause pipe. Looks like she is ready to depart (Tug alongside) and hot work still going on... What is being done??

Windows reached all the way up to ceiling. The Wheelsman can actually see the steering pole without interference. Keeps wind rain and snow out of Pilot House. A certain portion of the front window is always left open.
