I recall being at Bayship in the '80s when the Blough was in long term lay-up and the shipkeeper had a three legged dog as a pet.

On the John Dunn Jr. back in 1957. Captain had dog, Deckwatch had job of picking up after dog..

Just one more reason why the 'deck watch' position should never have been eliminated :D

One of the Nicholson boats had a cat, forget which one though.

ASC policy states no pets allowed onboard. Been that way for some years now.

I have found no listing for a cat on board. However, I have found the following listings for an on-board mascot:
William A. McGonagle - crew had a "pet owl" in 1961.
Harvard - dog - 1953; Johnstown - CE had a dog in 1961; N. F. Leopold - German Sheperd in 1926; Kamloops - dog in 1926-1927;
Pathfinder - crew had adopted ducks in 1959; South Park - dog in 1939; Crescent City - dog in 1944; John B. King - dog in 1930; LaPetite - dog in 1874; Onoko - dog in 1915; Joseph Young - dog in 1975; Georga A. Marsh - dog in 1917; J. F. Schoellkopf Jr. - dog in 1944; Sparkman D. Foster - dog in 1956; Robert J. Paisley - dog in 1939; Francis Widlar - dog in 1920; W. E. Fitzgerald - half-breed coyote in 1945; W. K. Bixby - dog in 1914; S. R. Kirby - dog in 1916; and Benjamin F. Fairless - dog in 1965.

Reportedly, the dog on the Kamloops refused to board the Kamloops in 1927. The boat was lost on that trip.

Back in the '90's I was at St Clair Shores CG Station and they had a black dog.

The mackinaw-83 had several dogs at different times in her early days.

I certainly have never seen a cat on board that vessel that one time...

I never heard of a policy but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Years ago it was not unusual to see animals, usually dogs, aboard many boats. They usually belonged to the captain.

Another weird question, what is the policy for having animals/pets aboard ship? I believe I've read before that not so long ago to have shipboard "mascots" on board.
