Hello Beecher,
I have been reading your thread and the kamakazie.jpeg caught my eye. Can you tell me about that particular pic? Was this an airshow, when was it and is it an annual event? I wish we could combine them at our airshows here in IL, how cool would that be! Thank you, Lisa

Hi Lisa - The picture was from the Cleveland National Air Show in about 2004. The runways line up the approach right over the museum freighter, William G Mather. I took the shot from about 500 yards away and zoomed in. The Air Show is held annually on Labor Day weekend. or it was from the Japanese attack on the Great Lakes during the Great Cleveland Cliffs 16 ship taconite convoy in April of 1942.

Algocanada is sailing up the river under tow right now. It has been a long while since the whistles and bridge horns have sounded off.

There is so much debris in the river since the flooding. We had over a foot of snow followed by 1-3 inches of rain.

I saw the Neah Bay sail out of Cleveland yesterday. I would guess she assisted with this arrival too.

Update: The Pathfinder D/A followed her up the river.

Work is still being done to the Sam Laud. They had some seamen working a picket line on the GW yard a few weeks back .

The Mac stayed about 24 hrs. The Neah Bay went out heading East yesterday morning.

The way it was explained to me was; The furthest west landside bollard failed at the forward end of the boat and the series of remaining bollards will not properly hold the boat in place. Hence the system is inadequate. They will most likely place the Sam Laud anchors on the land for now I am told.

Can someone explain what "trouble with the bollard system" might be? I understand that a "bollard" is the object to which a vessels line is secured. Do you think the shore side "bollard system" is failing or does one assume that a bollard aboard the ship is coming looses from the deck? TIA John

Thanks for the info on McKee Son's Mr Guest. That leaves only a handfull of boats out there.

The Neah Bay had the media on board the other day demonstrating the boat's capabilities and life on board. It was a nice piece.

I ran into the Shipkeeper of the Sam Laud the other day. They are quite busy on the boat. They are also having mooring trouble on the forward end's bollard system that is going to take some heavy work to correct. He is watching the winds and crossing his fingers untill this is fixed.

It looks like the McKee Sons is finally done for the year. Today I found it docked directly behind the Maumee.

Don't know where McKee Sons went to. There has been a cutter here going in and out the last few days.

Update:2-3-11 15:10 The Neah Bay is pulling away from her mooring right now.

McKee Sons arrived yesterday into Cleveland Harbor at 11:00. She is backing down the river now with assistance. This tug/barge has had some trouble of late. Everybody else seems to have laid up. When will she give it a rest? She has lots of ice stacked up down the river waiting for her.

BTW -For the record - the layup date for the Sam Laud was overnight on 1-16-11. There are several forward hatches open and two dockside cranes working on her now.

I tried attaching a picture of the rusting huletts over on Whiskey Island but was shut down by size restrictions. Those things are going to rust away because of the "friends of the huletts" decade old fight with the CCPA & USACE. A friend of mine was going to display an arm but those folks made her & her money walk away. Sad but true.

Update - McKee Sons is sailing back up the river now. She is making the Mittal runs it seems. A good sign for the economy I would say. I wonder how long she will be runnin' the river. February?

My insider NFL source states they are all puppets for Holmgren. They will be on leashes. We will see if that works or not or is even true. But this source is usually always right. Otherwise, I hope whatever they do bears some fruit.

Algocanada sailed back down river today with assistance. That boat seems to be maintained very well.

I heard five long boat whistle blasts about an hour ago.

McKee Sons has just showed up out the window and is sailing up river now.

The Algocananda sailed up the river this morning. The Iowa and Rhode Island were assisting.

The building on the left of Algocanada in the below picture is the Federal Courthouse. We get to watch all the news media swarm all the public officials when they come and go to court lately. A real circus.

I woke up to the Sam Laud moored up to the GW dock outside my window. They had staged materials and a crane on the dock last week. They have the forward end nearest the Carter Rd Lift Bridge. They seem to be working below decks on the forward end. Seems like layup here again. The season seems be be over now. There is ice as far as I can see on the Lake this morning.

How 'bout them Packers winnin' w/o a runnin' game! Gonna be a show down in Chi Town huh?

A CG Cutter appeared from the west escorting what looked like Pathfinder - D/A. The Iowa was cutting up the harbor in wait.

A lower lakes boat came into Cleveland yesterday with a tug escort.

The Sam Laud is backing down the river now.
The foreground shows the Rapid Transit train that runs back and forth to Hopkins Airport.

I hear the trains, planes, choppers, boat whistles, trucks, ambulances, police cars, parties, concerts, Browns games, Indians games...

CG Bob - Good luck on your project. Is the tug at CSR? The picture below is a camera phone view out my window. I can't quite see around the corner by CSR by this angle. I'll grab my camera and head out & see if I can get a shot of it.

The American Republic sailed in on Tuesday at 10:00.

On Monday (Jan 10), I fired up the #1 generator on the Apalachee, a former USCG tug. Apalachee is tied up near the Columbus Road bridge, and is being restored as a working museum ship by the Coast Guard Tug Association.

McKee Sons arrived through the ice today. Betcha' she is layin' up here. I have not seen much activity lately. I heard one boat whistle on Sunday and that has been it. Cheers.
