We have stayed there 3 times, plan on going back in September most likely. Very clean, nice rooms, but older motel. Price is right as well. Guess it depends on what you looking for. The Lockview Motel is directly across from the Locks Visitors center, the Longships Motel is a couple blocks west on Portage right across the street from the upper gates of the Mac Lock. Both are older motels, Lockview has WiFi only in the lobby while the Longships doesn't have it at all AFAIK. Some people have written well of the Holiday Inn at I-75 & Easterday-has all the amenities plus a view of the St Mary's above the locks.

McDonalds policy is to tear down any restaurant after it has closed, I assume they don't want the public to view a failure.

Not sure about that, as two closed ones here have become other restaurants, and a third is a lawyer's office.

I was wondering the same thing as to why they decided to tear it down after all these years. As mentioned in an earlier post, when I was up at the Soo it seemed they always did a good business and were fairly busy and it was quick service and the food was always good as well. Could they be tearing it down to make it bigger for the inside part? Just a thought. Hope that they bring it back as it was quick and easy for many of the tourists including myself there.

From an article in the Soo Evening News from Feb 2013, it appears the owner decided to close the restaurant adjacent to the HIE, to concentrate on their other establishment on the I-75 Business Spur. Although I agree that the location near the International Bridge and University always appeared busy, that perception may not reflect the actual revenue generated by that particular store. This would be largely dependent upon the value of the average order placed by customers compared to the operational costs of that location. Furthermore, the location could be somewhat tricky to get in and out of if you did not know the area. As the store was nearing 20 years in age, it also possible it was becoming due for replacement or extensive remodeling. On the plus side, the news report indicated that the owner offered all of the employees positions at her other restaurant. From looking at Google Earth, the restaurant appears to have been demolished soon after closing as it appears as a vacant grass lot by October of 2013. I have attached a link to this story.

We always camp at Brimley State Park, spending nine nights there over the Fourth of July this year. There is no doubt that the. McDonalds is no longer there. From what I heard, McDonald's Corporation wanted a major upgrade to the facility, resulting in a large expenditure and the franchisee declined resulting in the building being closed and demolished. A new one was built on I-75 spur.

The McDonalds by the Holiday Inn Express is no longer there. The building has been torn down, only the empty lot remains.

That's odd, as it was always busy when I stopped on my way to the waterfront. Did it have a fire?

Stayed there only once, but it was a fantastic experience! Myroom overlooked the locks and ships were at eye-level! Always eat at the Freighters Restaurant. Good food, good prices, good view.

It's nnice but the rooms are small. The Last Resort is half way between the locks and mission point. Also much cheaper and recently re modeled

We actually just stayed there this week. Tuesday/Wednesday nights. We ordered a single king room, but didn't get there till late at night. Found out at check in that we had been upgraded to a king suite. Not just any king suite, but 6th floor, corner suite. We had the best view imaginable of Portage Ave and could see the Admin building and lower gates of both locks. Food in the hotel was decent. I truly have no complaints about our stay at all. I review on Trip Advisor, so I look for stuff to point out. I got nothing here. We really had a great time, and will be staying again for sure! The picture here is one I took from our room.

I have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which is very nice but a little bit outside of town though. They have nice clean rooms and a continental breakfast and many other things as well. I am sure that someone else will know more than I do about it. It has been many years since I stayed there but, you do get great service and as mentioned the continental breakfast. There is also outside a McDonald's restaurant as well. From the Holiday Inn Express you can be downtown and at the Locks within 5-10 minutes give or take. I have never stayed at the Ojibway Hotel as it is on the pricey side I am sure but, I would definitely recommend the HIE hotel on your stay there. One final note, I have heard that they have WIFI and you can track the ship movements and some of the upper floors and rooms do have a lookout view toward the upper St. Marys River and Lake Superior. My wife and I stayed there last summer and we had a great time. The location, accommodations, food, and service were top notch. Ask for a room with a view of the locks.

Want to boatnerd Soo on vacation in August. Reading mixed reviews on the Ramada Inn/Ojibway hotel. Anybody got any tips about staying there? View of the St. Marys River??
