The connection system did Not fail, they disconnected due to human error. The tug then went and hid behind the Keweenaw allowing the barge to drift away.

I believe it was two seasons ago the tug Victory lost her Kuber barge during a storm due to a connector issue. After jettisoning the barge she couldn't find it or was unable to retrieve it. It ended up being found by the Saginaw and they lashed it to their side and brought it in.

Re one of the "Glens" breaking her back, Beechglen buckled amidships at Cardinal, Ontario years ago, but the cause was a faulty loading plan, not a storm. The vessel was subsequently repaired and returned to service for a time.

Perhaps not what you are looking for, but the barges Chief Wawatam and Pere Marquette 41 were each caught in separate storms in 1997 and 2000 respectively that caused them to list so much that they lost most of their cargo and unloading machinery on deck. The Chief Wawatam was being towed on a wire, but the Pere Marquette 41 had the tug Undaunted in the notch and there was quite a bit of damage to both the tug and the barge as they released.

A barge took on water the morning of 17 Nov. in bad weather, listed and dumped its cargo five kilometers/three miles southeast of the Rawley Point Lighthouse north of Two Rivers, Wis. About 4,900 tons of steel mill scrap, a crane and a front-end loader sank in 46 meters/150 feet of water after the scrap cargo shifted. The barge, owned by J.W. Purvis Marine Ltd., has minor damage though not to its hull. After a U.S. Coast Guard investigation, the tow was released at 1800 17 Nov. to continue its voyage.

Close calls
Has any modern vessels (1975-present) come close to sinking in a storm or collision out in mid lake? I heard one of the (Glens) broke her back during a storm during the 80s.
