Reclaimers

As a person who has worked on every ship with a reclaimer, I can assure you they work well (or used to) for what they were intended for. The hold design was done this way for the extra cubic capacity, and I will say it wasn't for "a little extra cubic". The ships were designed to carry coal for Ontario Hydro and the extra cubic allowed for some very impressive loads that gravity flow ships couldn't even touch. Still to this day some of these old girls can still perform quite well, Algoma Progress can still pump off 27500 M/T of ore pellets in less than 6 hrs and she is going for scrap. These ships can also perform quite well wil non free flowing cargoes that gravity flow ships can't unload, because the reclaimer keeps cargo moving all the time. Yes they are getting to be high maintenance, but what or who isn't the older they get.

I am not sure if the reclaimer would have to be used all the time. They ran other cargoes other than salt. We ran into Lambton with coal which is pretty free flowing. Hope you enjoyed the video.

Those things must need a massive amount of service to keep them working properly. I've been watching boats for 25 years here & until I read this post, I had never heard of a reclaimer. Leaves me shaking my head.

Quite the setup aye. I was engineer on Transport during winter layup in Nanticoke and went down into cargo hold once. Its like a Combine on steroids.

I'm not sure about this, but didn't the MV. Henry Ford II get a similar reclaimer system when she was converted to a Self-Unloader in 1974?

Enterprise, Transport, Olympic and Progress all have reclaimers and flat tank tops. Century used to have a sloped tank top so that the reclaimer augers had to draw the cargo "uphill" to the center belt. JD Leitch is now flat like the Assiniboine.

The Canadian Transport, Canadian Enterprise each had a reclaiming machine. As did the Henry Ford II. The Louis R. Desmarais had three mini-reclaimers, one for each conveyor belt.

I wish I knew computers better, but go on Yahoo! type in "unloading into another ship", a 2:16 video "Sept Isles" will show up. I believe the self-unloader is the Assiniboine. A good video of the flat bottom self-unloader.

What boats had this system? I've never seen a self unloader without a centerline slope inside the holds between the belts. The flat bottom in those drawings is new to me. Must be for greater cubic capacity.

Yeah looking for the shipboard ones. Like the some of the Former ULS boats have, did any other fleet use them?
