Re: football this weekend
Okay edm and all you College Football fans out there I give you guys all credit and kudos as OSU looked dominating in their win over Oregon on Monday night. I've already read and heard that OSU will probably be the top seeded team in the NCAA polls next season as well. For edm, you may want to re-think that about the Red Wings as I read yesterday that goalie Jimmy Howard will be out at least a month or more with a groin injury! I used to watch and follow the Wings but, now that their tree has lost the leaves and the players of the Cup era are gone I don't know hardly anybody on that team anymore! Edm you talk about the NFL being a circus and I agree in part but, like all sports (Pro Sports) at least it is all a circus especially baseball! It is ridiculous how many games they play a season at 162 or whatever it may be and to play baseball in the Midwest in late March into April that is just nuts and insane especially coming from Spring Training in warm places like Florida. But, as we all know folks its money that is the root of all evil especially in your Sports in today's world and society.

Great job Ohio St.! Well done! I'll have to see how the big cheese does against Seattle.
Re: football this weekend
The Big Ten looks like it has a bright future.
Chasing O-H-I-O should be enough motivation!

Re: football this weekend
i totally agree with beecher ! congrats to osu. they beat oregon at 'every' position to become the national champions. that game will go down in the record books as the best game meyer has coached. the very best part is that football has provided a way for many young folks to get a good education. as for me, my football season ended last night, as i no longer watch the nfl circus. it's now onto hockey and the mighty red wings.
Re: football this weekend
The Ohio State Buckeyes proved one thing. They proved they are hands down The Undisputed National Champions!
Re: football this weekend
I'm looking forward to the championship college game tonight, as I have stopped watching the circus NFL games after the officials were paid off on the Detroit game. From the news I have seen on TV - more bad calls were made this weekend in the NFL circus by officials. I've watched my last NFL game. Hopefully tonight's championship game will have qualified officials making correct calls ! The Oregon team looks strong but, beecher has twenty on OSU. I've only put a 'fiver' on Oregon as you never know what Meyer has 'up his sleeve' to win the game for OSU. This should be a good game to watch. What do other folks think about this championship game ?

Re: football this weekend
Wow, a Great weekend for the NFL Playoffs this weekend I would say. You had two great classic games with the Ravens vs Patriots and then today you had "Ice Bowl II with the Cowboys vs Packers." That was a heck of game between those two squads today as I was rooting for the Packers all the way to beat the Cowboys and I am glad to see that they did. I am even more happy to see that they had a call "reversed on a Dez Bryant first down catch down near the goal line!" He was so beside himself after learning that the call was reversed I couldn't stop laughing! Goes to show the Cowboys last week how us Lions fans felt when it happened to us and how we got screwed by the officials. Just to say as well to Jerry Jones the Cowboys owner, "Money can't buy you love Jerry!" What I mean there is, last week he probably bought and paid the officials to screw us on the PI call. So, this week it is payback time for Jerry and the Boys.

Re: football this weekend
Okay all of you "College Football Junkies" out there, in case you missed the NFL Playoffs this weekend then shame on you as you missed a classic! The Patriots vs Ravens was one of the best NFL Playoff games in recent memory. Twice the Pats and Tom Brady came from 14 point deficits and went on to win. The road to the Super Bowl at least in the AFC now goes through New England and I am sure that many NFL faithful and followers want to see the "Dream matchup of Peyton vs Brady next weekend!" It will be very interesting to see how that one plays out and keep in mind that New England has been "A House of Horror and Pain along with a Nightmare for Peyton Manning!" In the NFC, the road once again goes through Seattle and the 12th Man next weekend after they crushed Carolina tonight. Next to the Ravens vs Patriots game, I am looking forward to seeing "The Ice Bowl Game 2" between the Cowboys vs Packers tomorrow. If I am a Packer fan, I would be concerned with the health of Aaron Rogers and his calf muscle and even more concerned that Dallas was 8-0 on the road this year!
Re: football this weekend
As of Friday night - Oregon is favored by 6 1/2 points. This should be a game worth watching.
Re: football this weekend
The Bucks vs the Ducks National Championship has all the earmarks of a real classic. It should be a great game! The Sugar Bowl was an instant classic. The Buck's experience & momentum from this National Championship run is enormous. They have experienced just about everything to date.
I know many alumni and hear there is a large contingency of OSU fans headed for Texas that do not have tickets. They will be tailgating and be intimidating. They should outnumber all the Duck fans by quite a bit
I'll put 20 on the Bucks! Go Bucks!
O H I O !

Re: football this weekend
I'm not sure on this Oregon - OSU game. Oregon does look very strong but, how many times in this past year have we seen Meyer pull a rabbit out of his hat and win games ? I'm only putting a 'fiver' on Oregon. I've lost count on the Q.B. changes this year at OSU. Has anyone heard the line on the game ?

I am pulling for the Ducks all the way to beat the Buckeyes so then I can brag about it with my relatives in Ohio who surely will be watching and rooting for OSU to beat the Ducks. So, I am a Duck fan and pulling for Oregon in this one to beat OSU!
Re: football this weekend
As far as the "Ice Bowl" goes I was still very young and have only ever seen the NFL Films shows on it. As far as Oregon or OSU goes my money is on Oregon. They are a more well rounded team than OSU.
Re: football this weekend
Oregon ( 2 ) will be playing Ohio State ( 4 ) January 12 th at 8:30 for the National Championship. ESPN will be televising the game from Gerry's Place in Dallas Texas. Anyone have any thoughts on who will win this game ?

Re: football this weekend
I was 15 years old at the time. Grew up almost straight across Lake Michigan from Green Bay, so we could pick up their TV stations occasionally with our antenna. I hated the Packers because it always seemed like when they lost the sportscasters from GB always made excuses and when they won they would gloat. Hated it when the Packers won, but now that I'm older and wiser(?) I hope the Packers crush the Cowboys. How times change!!

Re: football this weekend
Just wonder if we NFL and sports fans could be in for "Ice Bowl 2" this weekend? Does anyone remember the original Ice Bowl played in 1967 at Lambeau Field? I was not yet born when they played that game as it was one for the history books and one of the coldest games played in the NFL. Anyone have thoughts on that?

Go Lio.. Oh, wait... Never mind. Guess I have to root for the Pack this week. That happens about as often as I root for Ohio State (when they play Notre Dame).

When I was a TV Red-Shirt, I worked with a lot of refs. They were paid by game and rate of pay differed based on position/responsibility.
They were not full-time jobs like baseball and hockey where there are multiple games during a week.
They had full-time careers, reffing was a side-line, just like high school and college refs.
One ref, Jerry Winen, out of West Virgina, owned an insurance agency, another one I worked with was Sup of Schools for Dallas TX Public Schools and another ref, Dean Look (who played for Michigan State) owned his own insurance agency in Okemos, MI.
One ref out of Dayton told me he got paid $350 per game plus travel expenses. If the games were close enough to home, like the Silver Dome, he would drive and bring his wife with him. They would make a week-end out of it.
