Pretty cool Bookworm. I caught the Maumee River "breaking" one year. From almost solid ice to broken flows to a flushed river in about 2 hours. Rising waters from heavy spring rains contributed heavily to the rapid break up. Wish I had a camera... or a phone with a camera when it happened!

Although what I saw at the St. Clair River (south of Marysville) this afternoon was a totally new experience to me, it might be something common for crews aboard the Algoma Hansa and Victorious. The time frame from first to last photo was a mere 40 minutes.
