Foghorns remembered

I do have recordings of the Tibbett's Point fog horn at Cape Vincent along with a ship blowing the old 3 long fox signal. We grew up with that fog signal, kind of miss those days. I'll convert them to .wav files.

I'm hoping other Boatnerds will chime in with recordings or sources of recordings. I'm hoping Brian W. from Buffalo has some leads for eastern Lake Erie foghorns.

On the 15th, I was fortunate to hear the English River on the way into Buffalo blowing her foghorn every minute due to foggy conditions out on Lake Erie. It made me remember hearing the foghorns from Buffalo Harbor, and the Point Abino lighthouse many years ago under similar foggy conditions. I wonder if anyone had the foresight to record these now gone aids to mariners, both on Lake Erie and other waypoints on the Great Lakes. These sound files would make an excellent addition at Boatnerd, even as a links page.

Actually, to correct myself, the English River was blowing her whistle as a signal in foggy conditions. If I'm going to post, I can at least be accurate.

Back in the early 60's there was a watchman on one of the Pittsburg boats who had one of the first tape recorders. He was recording all the different sounds on a steamboat. Dropping the anchor and the chain running out the hawse pipe to the whistle blowing during foggy weather. I believe his name was Johnnie Johnson. If he is still around maybe he will read this and produce his tapes for us.

Sailed with a Johnnie Johnson on the Clarke in the mid-70s. He was a wheelsman and was from the UP. Wonder if it was the same guy? Was really big into carpentry. Always building something.
