Anti pollution laws prohibit painting and Owners would be liable. The Seaway added regulations in their handbook - regulation 59 (5) making painting difficult even while secured along the wharves.

While sailing I was also warned about painting the draft marks while docked in the canal?

Yes. I have to agree, many of the Lakers today look like they are afraid of new paint.
This doesn't seem to be the case with the Salties lately.

Interesting that you mention this in a post about the Palmerton. Definitely it's a salty that could use some paint.

Maybe this will explain why Lakers are looking the way they do. Also, painting a Laker isn't like painting your kitchen. It's not an easy job to do.

The cranes on Palmerton are rated at 450 Tons. Truly a Heavy Lift Ship.

You could almost put it in the "crane boat" category. It's considered a "heavy-lift" ship.

The Palmerton does have some massive cranes doesn't it.

Ironic that some of the newer salties have the looks of the old straight deckers. i.e. cabins fore and aft. At the same time, the salties which used to look like floating rust buckets, seem to have better external upkeep than the Lakers. Or is it just my perspective? The Palmerton resembles a crane boat.
