ULS Ship Names

I don't see why they had to drop the Canadian identity. It was not like the ships names where ULS Provider, ULS Transport ect....

I am equally upset at the name changes on Quebecois, and Montrealais. There is no real connection between ULS and the two names in a business sense. If they respected the Gordon C. Leitch, John D Leitch and James Norris for the individuals who's names graced their hulls, why change these two? They are named after two Canadian cities and as stated before, they have gone 50 years without anyone else seeing fit to change them. The new names just sound bad. The dont roll off the tongue like the old ones did. Another piece of great lakes history bites the dust.

Sorry for the rant, but I am partial to the Quebecois, Montrealais and the Miner, although the former has been down for a few years now. At least I can be thankful the two are still operating, even if the names are wrong in my opnion!

Algoma use old names from past vessels, like Algogulf, Algoisle, Algocen, Algofax, Algoriver, Algosound, Algoport and Agawa?

Upper Lakes Shipping has a long history and a lot of employees that might not be pleased to see that history essentially erased on day 1.

So adapting the existing fleet names in Algoma's usual naming pattern and maintaining the names honoring an individual in ULS' past is a way to show that respect for ULS's heritage while also adapting the names to fit with Algoma's existing fleet to help ease uniting the two fleets after Algoma's purchase of ULS.

So I imagine that is why we didn't see some of these ships recieve the names of past vessels in Algoma's fleet in order to help ease the crews of Upper Lakes Shipping into the new integrated fleet.

I think adding Algoma before the former ULS ship names was a logical choice. I think for the newbuild Equinox class ships, I would suspect some of the older names may come back into use (e.g. Algocen, Algowest for one of the bulkers). Algoport will never be used again as this name was officially "retired", along with her fleet number #14. This was a tribute to all her sailing employees over 30 years.

I agree, there really wasn't a need to change them. No one else has ever seen fit to do so, why now?

I had hoped the Montrealais and Quebecois would've kept their names after both sailing with the same names since entering service nearly 50 years ago, through two different owners.

Always thought they had especially nice sounding names and hoped they were going to keep them during the time they have left.
