Conneaut Huletts

Interesting. I didn't know about the repair building.

In your flickr photo you can see all 5 bases, but only 4 trolleys. The fifth trolley is on the turn table in front of the Hulett Repair Building being worked on.

Across from the coal dock they used to rebuild winches. If one or more of your winches needed rebuilding chances are you would be laying up in Conneaut. This is back in the late 50's/early 60's. Back when they still had the ferry boat to run the sailors across the slip instead of going all around the East end of the slip.

I know when I sailed the ferry boat was no longer in use. Think it was still sitting at the dock in the early 70s. Remember having to tie up at the stone dock because there was a boat under the huletts. After she was unloaded, us deckhands had to let the lines go on the Clarke, then run all the way around to the ore dock. Didn't look far until you had to run around with work boots and a life vest on.

I know we discussed this subject before. I've got some photos of the Clarke that I took in 1976 when I was on her when we were in Conneaut. It was '76 because we had just completed putting the bicentennial colors on her. I took the photos between the coal dock and tug dock and above the huletts you can see the top of the repair building. I know around that time or a little later when we'd go into Conneaut they were in the process of rebuilding a machine. Can't remember what year, but it was in the '70s.

When I worked at P & C Dock in the early 80's we had 5 completer Hullets. We were working on refurbishing #5 base when we were told to stop work and we were all laid off. The Hullet repair building had platforms at every level needed to work on any part of the trolley.

...shows the Hulett shop building in the background. They could line the Hulett bridge (the base) up with a trestle, and roll the trolley (the top part) off the bridge, across the trestle and onto an elevated turntable, then either rotate it to roll it into the shop building or a stub trestle. I believe they had 5 trolleys and 4 bridges, so they could swap them for maintenance, at least until Hulett #2 crashed into a boat.

There is a faint photo in the Arcadia book on Conneaut Railroads, but does anybody know of any other photos?
