There are no dumb questions.

After a name change for the trip to the breakers, the easiest and cheapest way to do it, is to paint over a few letters of the old name and come up with a new one!

Owners sometimes do not want their name re-used or may be planning to use the old name on a future vessel, so a name change is made a requirement for the sale. Since the trip to the breakers most often is undertaken by a third party, not the new owner, it usually requires a new registration and a new name anyway.

Canadian Miner was a good example. If something goes wrong with the tow or a group is protesting the scrapping you don't want it tied to your company.

Apparently, she has become PETER.

That's correct, and her scrap tow will leave around June 6.

If it was up to me, I'd pick "SWELL". Cause that would be a swell name.

Alot of boats are having their lifeboats removed and replaced with rafts and rescue boats

I didn't see any life boat(s) on the Creswell in the photo page. Or was I missing something?

Stayed up late to see the Cresswell under sail one last time. She passed my place at 2am in the South Shore Canal at Kahnawake. I'm still shocked to see her going for scrap when much older tonnage is still in use. I remember seeing her brand new as the Algowest not that long ago. Adios, amigo.

Denny wrote:Algowest, you may be correct on the 1997 or 1998 thing as far as her having engine problems and waiting on engine parts. I recall twice seeing her in 1998 in Sarnia each time at the Government Dock. The first time was I think in May 1998 and the other was for certain in August of that year as well. That was before they threw the dust reclaimers on her and she started hauling those clinker cargoes that would eventually do her in along with all of the salt cargoes as well. At least back then even though she was converted to a self-unloader, she still looked very good and nice! Not like she is now unfortunately. I agree sad to see her go as I only saw her once in 2014 and did not see her in 2015 other than when she was at lay-up in Sarnia for the Winter. A bit off subject here, but it is only a matter of time before the Jackman ends up looking just as bad as the Cresswell does now! Since the Jackman has taken up the Cresswell's job of hauling salt and clinker cargoes she will also be doomed eventually from hauling all of those cargoes! I also ask and wonder with the new ships Algoma is building overseas, if they would try to build one to replace the Cresswell and Jackman on those cement clinker runs? I am sure they will haul there share of salt loads but, who will handle the cement clinker runs once the Cresswell and eventually the Jackman are done? Just my 2 cents!
I only got to see the Cresswell once and it was a coincidence that I was at the port of Oshawa photographing the Jackman, when she(Cresswell) passed by in the distance, after departing St Mary's cement. I had no idea it would be the first and last time I ever saw her.

I believe in Summer 1997 or 98, Algowest had engine problems and ran the Marquette to Soo ore shuttle while waiting on engine parts or offseason to have repair work completed. Makes for a slow trip on one engine, but can be done. Sad to see her go, was one of my early favorites as a young boatwatcher!

Peter R. Cresswell departed wharf 17 dock this morning and is currently out in Lake Erie preparing to turn around and head down the Canal on her last trip using 1 engine for her expected destination of Montreal

Algoma has sent engineers there. Not 100% sure but looking like she is going on her own power.

I don't think that age has much to do with the Cresswell as you just take a look at the types of cargoes she has carried in the last few years! She has carried a variety of cargoes from iron ore to mostly salt and cement clinker but, the salt and the clinker cargoes have just beaten down her hull and it is starting to show its wear and tear after all these years. Salt does not do a boat and steel good as you look at the Algomarine and Algoma Navigator both of which have carried lots of salt in the past few years and look now as to what is happening with them and where they are going to? That is also why the Algorail and Algoway look sick if you get the chance to see them sometime! Sorry to go off subject here just trying to make a point about some of the cargoes the Algoma ships are carrying and why some are headed to scrap. Just my 2 cents!

Isn't the crestwell a relatively young ship being launched in 1982?
