Is the C. L. Austin using its bow thruster in the stern shot of it leaving the canal in tow? I looks like there is a burst of smoke coming from just above the pilothouse. Also there does not appear to be a towline from the bow of the Austin so is the Malcolm providing motive power while the steamer is being steered with its own rudder?
Probably. It received one before the 1964 season. The Malcolm towed the Austin on the hip out of Duluth and through the Portage Canal, and supplied current to an air compressor to power the freighter's steam steering gear. The Barbara Ann joined the tow off Grand Marais.

If you look closely you can see a towing bridle made up on the Austin's bow, so it's likely the Malcolm had her on the hip for harbor maneuvering and then took her under line-astern tow once out in the lake.

The Federal Rhine had the capability to tilt its radar mast and antennas backwards. So did the Federal Calumet, Federal Maas and a few of the others built in the period from 1977-1981.

The Old Steinbrenner C.L. Austin. Is there a story behind such a big tug, The Malcolm, apparently helping her along? The Tug looks huge.
The tug, aided by the Barbara Ann, towed the C. L. Austin from Duluth to Buffalo, arriving 7 December 1982, with a hull full of contaminated storage grain that could only be unloaded there.

Believe yrs. ago the local PBS station did a documentary on a Fednav saltie loading here in the Twin Ports and going to Stavanger, Norway and the radio officer raised the mast during the trip.

Probably because they were taking her all the way to Buffalo, plus it was December, so probably weather might have been another factor.
