Saginaw is upriver from Saginaw Bay and footers cannot go there. The Karn plant is at the mouth of the Saginaw river so the footers technically do not leave the bay. They have to back out into Lake Huron to depart as they cannot turn in the channel leading to the river.

Brett,

The McCarthy and as mentioned Indiana Harbor
come up only as far as the Consumer Energy Karn
Weadock docks to unload coal, the freighters are
far to huge to go any further up into the river
channel, an when they are finished unloading,
they simply back right out from whence they
came, far enough out into the Saginaw Bay
they make their turn an head off onto the Lake.

PS: with the completed dredging projects the
Saginaw River has an will continue to see the
once vital commodity shipping return to prominence.

Superior Midwest Energy's schedule has her discharging a partial cargo of coal at the Karn-Weadock power plant in Essexville / Bay City. This is a regular run for American Steamship footers. Looks like the Indiana Harbor and McCarthy each have another run to this plant scheduled in July.
