Al Miller's excellent book, "Tin Stackers," (pg. 99-100) covers the story of Pittsburgh Steamship's George G. Crawford in this storm, and they even reported watching the Argus founder. The Crawford made it to port, like the Sheadle, also. So it was not just the Holmes and the Sheadle that "made it to port."
Some ships that were driven aground in this strom should be called survivors also. These were later salvaged to operate for several decades: Matoa, H. B. Hawgood, Matthew Andrews, and Howard M. Hanna, Jr. - at least. These four 1913 survivors are well documented in Great Lakes shipwreck history. The Howard M. Hanna, Jr.'s story is facinating and her end in 1984 as a grain storage ship as the Lionel Parsons in Goderich is full of irony.

Would it be possible to get some copies of the information you have gathered so far Jared? We would like to try and document the Fords entire timeline in the storm. How would we be able to get in touch with you. -Steve

There is an interesting website with the Cliffs Captains reports after the storm.

You may have to cut and paste.

Only the Sheadle made it to port. The other ships you mentioned took shelter. I heard th story that the Holmes was in northern Lake Huron at the time heading up to Lake Superior. I remember my father telling me the story. The J.B. Ford is the last floating survivor of the 1905 Storm, while the Boyer was in the 1913 storm. I've been researching the Ford and 1913 history and have hit a dead end on it. In previous post I told the story of the Holmes in the storm. Jared D.

Other ships did survive the 1913 Storm: George G. Crawford, J. H. Sheadle, Matthew Andrews, Howard M. Hanna, Jr., and H. B. Hawgood - if not others.

Our group is looking to locate any information on the Holmes during the storm and accounts that were written down or other stories as recorded during or after the storm. Being she is one of only two ships to survive open Lake Huron during the height of the storm, there has to be information out there, but we are having difficulty locating it and would like to see if anyone out there knows more or where to find some of this lost history. Look forward to hearing from anyone who can help. -Steve
