Here is the Seacor subsidiary that is moving containers on the Mississippi and other inland rivers. Look in their "In the News" section for several newspaper and magazine articles about their services.

Its a possibility. There has been a lot of talk about increasing container traffic on the Mississippi, and quite a bit of grain is already exported in containers that would otherwise move empty back to Asia.
Perhaps you may have seen this operation. Seacor is hauling empty containers from Memphis (a big rail/truck served container hub) down to Baton Rouge. There they are loaded with plastic pellets for export. The loaded containers are then barged to container terminals in the New Orleans area to load onto ocean going ships.

While in Mississippi last week I was watching a lot of barge traffic South of Memphis and noticed one tow with a barge loaded with containers going South. Would they be moving grain this way ? Thanks for any info available .
