It was headed out into the lake, along with some other sailboats for the Wednesday Night sailboat races. It was under sail with a good tailwind, when suddenly the wind did a 180 degree switch, and now it was still in the channel being blown back towards the bridge, and before the bridge could be raised, it hit the bridge. I was told that it could not get it's engine started for some reason, so it had no way to avoid the bridge. An unfortunate situation. www.duluthharborcam.com also has a video of the incident.

In all the yrs. I sailed on the Great Lakes and the nearly 40 yrs. I've lived in Duluth, I thought you were supposed to wait for the bridge to go up. Guess I had that wrong.
