The products from those two Cement Plants are different. Buffalo used to get mortar from Alpena & cement from Bath.

Makes perfect sense to send an empty ship to a loading port. That’s how it works. Some clinker is imported to the Bath plant ground into cement reship the finished product.

so why would they send an empty ship all that way to load for detroit or clevland when they could load in the home port make no sence also red on line bath is not a shipping port only a reciving port

My 2015 Greenwood Guide shows that the Lafarge plant at Bath is capable of loading 900 tons per hour with no unloading capability. But it can receive coal and gypsum by self-unloader.

Did the Alpena unload somewhere before heading to Bath? I saw it pass down the St. Clair River on Saturday (6-2-18) and it was loaded.

for your info the Steamer Alpena loaded in Alpena for Bath they used to make the trip back in the day it used to be the J A W old run

The Iglehart never loaded in Alpena for Bath. LaFarge owns both cement plants, one in Bath and one in Alpena. Makes no sense to haul between those two locations. The Iglehart loaded in Bath for Cleveland/Detroit and occasionally Buffalo. I was on her for at least 20 of those trips.

There are several possibilities for her to go after she loads in Bath but I would guess for right now probably Buffalo or Cleveland? I guess we will have to wait and see after she is loaded where she goes next to unload. Also agree that it has indeed been quite a while since the Alpena made a visit through the Welland Canal. I suppose this could be a one time only deal but, would certainly be nice if she made a few more of those trips!

So I just looked at the ais and seen the Alpena is heading for Bath On. its been awhile i think that she has gone thru the Welland.Any ideas on where she is loading for.
