They've still got Conneaut and Nanticoke to haul ore to.Denny wrote:So with the news of U.S. Steel closing Zug Island next Spring, I would expect then to see more ore shipments to the Gary Works Plant next year and as has been mentioned here, possibly a few vessels may well remain in lay up possibly some of the 1,000 footers? If this is true then i assume then that GLF ships such as the Speer, Gott, Blough along with the Presque Isle may be hailing more to Gary and may not be making too many trips down here then? I would guess also that anything from ASC may also be making more runs to Gary as well? Sorry for so many questions just some thoughts I had and my two cents on this as well.

Re: Zug Island
If the Gary works is going to pick up the slack from an idled Zug as the USS announcement indicated, the pellets destined for Zug in the past will need to go to Gary. The coke production will be the more interesting question. Gary must get all their coke via train, as I have never seen coal delivered there. They may continue to coke coal at Zug and send it via rail to Gary. You don't just whip up coke ovens.Guest wrote:Closing Zug Island will have an adverse effect on shipping next year. With coal plant closures I would be willing to bet that we will see one or two footers remain in layup next season.
Most insiders seem to think this market retraction is going to be short lived.

Re: Zug Island
Does this mean no more stone, coal & ore boats going up the Rouge R? Or are there other steel-makers on the Rouge?
