Cleveland Activity 2011 4th Quarter
Re: Cleveland Activity 2011 4th Quarter
Hi MN, I am not sure on how to build a boat like this one. I do think they would do what ever was the easiest though. They have lots of toys to use like this huge gantry ( or what ever you call it)
I saw a boat about twelve miles off approaching from Pele Passage about noon today. I may have been a footer But not sure it may have been a river class like the buffalo as well.
We saw this tug barge sailing down river with assistance by Iowa and Illinois that we never saw before Not sure of the cargo. Steel maybe? We walked over to Public Square for a rare tour of the underground tunnels under the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (built 1894). It is a tribute to the Soldiers and Sailors from the Civil War from Cuyahoga County. They stored munitions and such after the war in these tunnels. The doorways were less that 5' tall between the passages and are said to have Orbs and ghosts in these tunnels according to the guide. Here is a sample Background info

Beecher, do you know the story behind the up-side-down boat? Kind of a different way to build one.
Re: Cleveland Activity 2011 4th Quarter
McKee Sons, Cleveland Rocks, and The Buffalo have been busy.
The Browns outlasted Seattle by a couple of 'sack flies

The barge Milwaukee is used to move heavy cargoes.
Re: Cleveland Activity 2011 4th Quarter
apalachee has been advertised for sale for about 2 months now; actual decision was made back in June. The museum plan fell through for a couple of reasons. First was no permanent home in Cleveland. Second was no real interest from the city or county staffs. Third was lack of funding, parts, and labor from the members of the Coast Guard Tug Association. There is an interested party that has made several visits to the apalachee; they were here most of last week with me and the CG Tug Association president. I had another possible buyer on board last Friday to look at her.Isaac wrote:So Apalachee is for sale again, so I would assume that the museum plan fell through, does anybody know?

Hi MN, The Westinghouse folks occupied that space for a long while. The freeway curve at this building has been called "The Westinghouse Curve" forever. I don't remember what the uses were but someone may here.
Not sure on the barge either. I never saw it out.
More pics though.
Here is CG Bob's Apalache that is for sale. Cheers

Hey Beecher.
Great photos as always! It looks like you snuck some real camera pix in there too. They look fantastic!
I really like seeing the shoreside buildings included. What division did (does) that great Westinghouse building contain and is that G barge a salvage rig?
Cheers
Paul

Cabinboy1 - If I were a recently retired laker and were to ever get a character mark after 55 years years of sailing the lakes, Collision Bend would be the place. Kinda' like a tatoo.
The maritime activity is up here.
The Calumet was in. Great Lakes Towing Nautica Queen with the Calumet in the background. The Manistee was here McKee Sons arrived from the West McKee Sons arrived with Cleveland Rocks and they passed here when CR/Cleveland is unloading now. I got more for later
Cheers

I never saw that divot on the Mather before. Old beauty mark or something since she became a museum?

Should read "hated". SorryMN Boater wrote:As always, great pictures Beecher.
Re: the CPD boat, I'd really hate to have to leave the boating duty for traffic duty. I can see why the guys that ran the boat really hayed getting pulled from that duty!
Re: Cleveland Activity 2011 4th Quarter
Thanks MN. I found a picture of them in action from 2003!

I took a lunchtime walk along dock 30 & 32 yesterday. I did not want to back to work.
The breakwall repairs are ongoing. There are folks gathering for fishing a few miles out. Looks like the perch jerking crowd. I hope they get their limit before the tropical system reaches us. The dock 32 warehouse is used by the City now. Not much in it other than retired/antique equipment. The City took the warehouse back from the Port Authority about 6 years ago for "development". Lots of progress huh?
The CPD boat is shown here in the dock 32 warehouse. It was removed from service in about 2004 with budget cuts. Those guys hated being pulled from that unit. Most went over to Traffic. The WG Mather has a nice character mark. This does not seem like the result of a normal bump, or does it? They lay up the Mather after Halloween. The Sam Laud has been running the River to Mittal. She passed by at about 5 am. I like starting the day with a Whistle call.
Cheers

A St Marys barge came in today from the East.
The Calumet sailed in from the West at 07:00. She waited in the harbor as if there was another on the river. I have yet to see her sail up today. I do hear a whistle now.
Here is the Algoma Transfer coming up the River with assistance yesterday.
The weather has been beautiful here. Thursday had high winds along the lake so 19 of us went out to Youngstown and played 36 holes on a Donald Ross course. Nice to say at the least.
I was standing on the Inner Harbor yesterday and a 28' fishing charter came in and tied off. It had three occupants. Two were in suits! I think they were Feds. Odd sight I might add.
Frontier Sentinel was chasing a boat earlier in the week. I don't think the boat has much of a chance.
We are off to a BBQ. Be safe.
Cheers,
