Along with the other issues cited here, I believe the Trib (newspaper, that is) several years ago moved its printing presses from their location on the Chicago River to a suburban site.
In later years the Chicago Tribune was sometimes used in the salt trade. I first saw it in 1982 unloading salt at the Cutler-Magner dock in Duluth. The dock had a very tight slip that only a short vessel like the Tribune could turn into. The master was John Leonard, who very graciously chatted with my friend and me and then asked the first mate to show us around the boat. That was the first boat I was ever aboard.
She was my first ship back in 1976 I was still in High School was on her for about a month great little ship wooden hatches and all and we did carry paper to Chicago from Thorold Ontario as well as from Baie Comeau Quebec
Deliveries to the Chicago Tribune ceased at the end of 1983 with the demise of Q & O, which had become a consistent money loser and unable to compete with the railroads for delivering newsprint. The Chicago Sun-Times had begun using rail, as would the Trib, in the late 1970s. Paterson handled most of that trade from the early '60s, and before that the Chicago Daily News received newsprint by Paterson, CSL, other Canadian canallers and U. S. Steel Products crane boats from the late 1920s until 1959 when it was absorbed by Marshall Field's Sun-Times. Paterson also delivered to R. R. Donnelly and Cuneo Press (both involved in magazine printing) through a warehouse way down the South Branch just above Cermak Road. Return cargoes for the paper boats were invariably grain, and on rare occasion coal or coke. I believe Time-Life also ran a barge to that warehouse from Canada to supply Donnelly with paper for Time, Fortune and Life.
