This seems possible to bring some changes to the existing lake fleet and I too am surprised this is the first I have seen it mentioned. This type of change in steel manufacture like that with Algoma along with the virtual extinction of the coal trade by the end of this decade and the continuing decline in the iron ore trade is surely going to transform the lake fleet by 2030. Coupled with increasing obsolescence in the US fleet with no major renewal programs on the horizon it is likely that the current number of ships in service will continue to decline during this period. I have noticed from periodically watching the Soo Locks and St. Clair River webcams that there are many instances in which I have seen just as many saltwater ships as those belonging strictly to the lakes trade. I know that this may be currently an exception but could there become a time in the near future at which the number of lake carriers will reach parity with the number of ocean vessels on the lakes/Seaway at any given time? I believe that such a situation could very well happen.

DOFASCO moving to DRI and EAFs

Dofasco Arcelor Mittal is moving to DRI and electric arc furnaces (EAF) by 2028. So no more blast furnaces/bofs in Hamilton after that time. I'm surprised that no one has talked about this before.
