There was a fine scale model of the RED WING in the corridor at Detroits old Olympia Arena. Bruce Norris owned both the team and shipping company at the time . Wonder where it ever ended up? It seemed to be about 4 ft long, but of course by the end of the 3rd period it was much bigger.

The Red Wing had a t2-Tanker stern from the Imperial Edmonton. She was costly to run, and unlike the Hilda Marjanne and Northern Venture, which were rebuilt with diesel-powered sterns, the Red Wing received no such rebuilding.

Starting in 1982, there was a 50% drop in steel production at U.S. steel mills and a reduction in the movement of grain from the ports of Duluth/Superior. In the same year, Mississippi river barge operators dropped their rates for the movement of grain to the Gulf of Mexico, under-cutting the movement of grain from Duluth/Superior. Upper Lakes Shipping was also impacted by the grain embargo to the Soviet Union after that country invaded Afghanistan in 1979.

That is why so many of the marginal grain carriers in the ULS fleet were idled starting in 1980, then most eventually sold off for dismantling.

The April 2023 issue of the Toronto Marine Historical Society's Scanner has a "Ship of the Month" on the Red Wing, with pictures of Gordie Howe at the christening podium at Port Weller on July 23, 1960. That issue of the Scanner is not on-line at this time.

I did not know she had a transplanted stern. Thank you for the replies.

Her Stern was laid down in 1944 as a T2 tanker and the first 16 years of her life was on salt water. Poor economic conditions in the 80's didn't help either.

The Red Wing seemed to have been a bit young to go to the scrapyard when she did at 27 years old. Is there a reason why she was scrapped so early?
