Having lived on the Straits for over 25 yrs I can remember only a few times seeing footers in the South Pass.
There were a couple times, at least one a grounding, where boats were deterred from using Round Island Passage and took the long route eastbound thru Poe Reef Light into the South Pass on into Lake Michigan

In '98 we were back hauling coal from Ashtabula to Port Washington in the JRB...went that way all the time.

Are there any documented instances of a 1,000 footer transiting the South Channel in the Straits of Mackinac?
