Re: Powerplant,

The Agawa Canyon is propelled by a quartet of Fairbanks-Morse 10-38D8 opposed piston engines. These engines cannot be converted to burn cheaper fuel than diesel which makes them expensive to operate in today's fuel price environment. Despite still being "serviceable" they are "uneconomical" to operate. Once very common on the Great Lakes these engines are only found in 5 active vessels: J.W. Shelley, Maritime Trader, Stepen B. Roman, Algorail and Algoway.

Her hull is rotten from her many years of service in the salt trade, salt was one of the Canyon's main cargoes for most of her life on the lakes.

I was unaware that the AC's hull was in poor condition, so, although this may seem a silly question, how is it in poor condition?

If the Agawa Canyon is to be scrapped because her hull is in poor condition, would it not be feasable to salvage her engine(s)? Just because her hull is bad , does it mean that her power plant is too?
