Weather conditions are peaking at the worst tonight as the big winter storm passes to the south and east of Lake Superior. Looks like northerly gales are pretty steady around 40 knots in the vicinity of Baie St. Paul and waves are likely building past 12-14 feet off the Keweenaw peninsula. The crew of the St. Paul probably decided they didn't want to be sailing in the trough (ie sideways to them and prone to uncomfortable rolling) of those waves all the way past to Apostle Islands. They're likely taking a weather course, sailing directly into the seas which means better boat handling and less rolling. Once they get closer to the north shore they'll find much smaller seas and they can hug that shore all the way into Duluth in relatively calm conditions.

As you mentioned there is also some traffic ahead of them at the ore docks so they're not likely in a particular hurry to make it into Duluth.

Rest assured, my friend, the world is NOT going to end on December 21. Believe me, the Mayans are indeed wrong on this one.

From where she is, she might hit Duluth as the sun comes up. She has over a 16 hour sail, if weather doesn't slow her down.

.Friday...North Gales To 45 Knots Diminishing To 35 Knots Late. Snow Showers Likely In The Morning...Then A Chance Of Snow Showers. Waves Subsiding To 10 To 14 Feet.

Maybe her arrival to the twin ports will get delayed by weather. A major winter Storm is moveing in with winter storm warnings and blizzard warnings. My guess would say the big lake is really going to rock and roll real soon. There is a vessel tied up below the soo. Not sure who it is or if its for low water or for weather or other reasons.

As of 8:45 p.m. (2045 hours) the Baie St. Paul is upbound in the lower St. Marys River by St. Joseph Island and yet to pass by and around Neebish Island. Looks like a nate night transit for her through the Soo Locks tonight. Welcome to the St. Marys River and the Soo area Baie St. Paul. 3 Long and 2 Short for a safe transit and journey.

Also lots of traffic to load at the CN Ore Dock in Duluth in the next couple of days as well. I see that AIS is showing Atlantic Huron and Atlantic Erie both arriving late the 20th to early the 21st to load at the CN in Duluth. Just wonder if anyone might get sent to another port? Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin is heading to BNSF to load.

They have pushed the arrival of the Baie St. Paul into Duluth back a couple of hours. Heavy traffic at the Soo maybe??
