Pilot in trouble? What was the boat doing on the runway?

I came across this interesting pair of slides as my winter project of scanning in slides continues. Below are two initial scans (I have plenty of work to do with this collection as they were not stored in the best of condition prior to me acquiring them in the late 1980s) taht I'm in the process of cleaning and sharpening up. These show a seaplane flying low above what appears to be the lower Detroit River, and along side the Bob-Lo steamer Ste. Claire. The first shows the plane flying towards it from the bow, while the second shows it coming up from astern. Although the plane probably appears closer than it really was to the steamship, it does looks to be within a few hundred feet of the ship, especially in the second picture, in which it also appears to be lower. As it blends somewhat into the treeline on the second picture, the seaplane can be hard to spot. I can only imagine what type of trouble a pilot would be in today for flying this close to a ship, especially one carrying passengers. The processing date on the slides is May 29, 1965.
