Seattle to Chicago via the Panama Canal is 8300 miles which would take 35 days at an "economical" speed of 10 knots. Add in a few days for preparations and Panama Canal delays resulting in a 40 day trip. Holding over 95,000 gallons of fuel the Acushnet could make the trip without refueling. Use only two of the four main engines and cruise along at 10 knots you might get fuel consumption down to 2,000 gallons per day of high sulfur IFO180, meaning $5000-$6000 in fuel use per day. The result is a 40 day trip using $250K of fuel (if everything goes perfectly).
Brent Michaels worked up a 40 day estimate, with fuel consumption about or under a 1,000 gallons a day. The power plant is very similar to the Mackinaw and the 180s. A 180 at cruising speed was about 600 to a 1,000 gallons per day. She presently has about 25,000 to 30,000 gallons of fuel onboard.
Those of you who have posted email addresses, I will get to you in the next day or two.
As to when the trip would go down, that all depends on how well a real legal mess regarding ownership can be resolved, and what the eventual owner wants for her. I do have to budget for some additional fuel. Panama Canal fees, crew expenses, stores for about 15 to 20 men for 40 days, along with whatever the Coast Guard might require above that. I will not know that until getting the ship.
