Asian Carp

It's not "if" the Asian Carp make their way into the Great Lake system, it's "when." Birds could carry the eggs...individuals with sick perversion could capture and release live carph into the Lakes just for warped pleasure.

The asian carp issue has tremendous implications for Great Lakes shipping. Our Illinois governor has indicated he is open to permanently closing the navigational link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River in the Chicago area. He is a flip-flopper on this and many other issues. This after pressure from other Great Lakes governors because of the asian carp issue.

My feeling is I doubt this would prevent the asian carp from entering the Great Lakes because there are too many other avenues for the carp such as rivers into Lake Erie, illegal or inadvertant release of carp by humans, and birds transporting fish eggs as is well documented in other species.

It would be a sad end to river navigation around here. I'm not sure the transporters of bulk cargoes on this corridor have the political clout to prevent the closure

They are still below the fish barrier on the Illinois. Something that needs to be addressed is not Lake Michigan but Lake Erie. They have actually found 15 of these creatures in Lake Erie. It seems like that would be a more clear and present danger then worrying about a Lake that has been shut off to the fish by electrical barriers. Just a thought.

a blip on the canadian news to-day saying a number of 10 of these carp could end up starting a colony of these fish. makes you wonder

Is there any new info, either scientific or anecdotal evidence on the spread of this fish [jumping carp]?? Have fishermen been pulling them in from Lake Michigan or is it still in the Mississippi/Illinois system??
Just morbid curiosity.
