Algoma Equinox

I have a few questions about the Algoma Equinox along with her sisterships. First, it has been mentioned here many times about a possible conversion to a self-unloader. I agree with all of yous as it may be done someday if the economics allow it as there is the lack of windows in front of the pilothouse where the SU gear would be at. Second, I can see them doing an SU conversion on the Equinox along with her sister the Harvester at some point in the future. However, how would this go with the two new builds from China for the Canadian Wheat Board or CWB Inc.? Wouldn't they also be converted to an SU someday or not since they are owned by the CWB but, operated by Algoma? Just my thoughts.

I`m sure that I`m not the only one who has noticed the lack of any cabin windows/portholes in the front central area of the house . Right about where the SU loop belt casing attaches to it .

She is ready for a conversion to a self unloader if economics allow it , somewhat like the Prairie Harvest was when CSL built her in Collingwood in 1984 .

Equinox is just leaving the Soo Locks & heading toward Superior.

Looking at the AIS maps this morning, apparently the Equinox had to pass the Paul R. Tregurtha somewhere in Lake Huron during the night. The Algoma Equinox has of 8:40 a.m. on December 8 is now about to report in upbound near Detour at the Soo and following her is the Paul R. Tregurtha. So, I would look for the Equinox to arrive at the Soo sometime around 1-2 p.m. if there are not any delays for her though.

Somehow, I don't think it will be much of a race. With the Equinox' hull design, she'll soon leave pretty much anything on the lakes behind.

The Paul R. Tregurtha was slightly ahead of the Algoma Equinox all day today from Lake Erie on up through both the Detroit and the St. Clair Rivers. Kind of ironic if you think about as you had the largest ship on the Great Lakes followed by the newest ship on the Great Lakes now with the Algoma Equinox. What a treat today!

I had a commitment so I couldn't get to the board 'till now but before I left it looked like the Equinox and the PRT were in a race when they entered Lake Huron. Saw it on the Boatnerd AIS and they were very close to each other. Did anyone else see this? They're still in close proximity.

Self-unloading ships typically have the stern thrusters since they make more dockings/year than straightdeckers.

Looks like she wasn't made with a stern thruster like the csl trillium class ships. Not seeing any markings near the stern , if so wonder why? Thanks

I imagine because it's a cost savings on Algoma's part.

As of 8:15 a.m. on December 7 she is in Lake Erie presently and is nearing Pelee Island heading upbound. I don't know the ETA's or times for Detroit and Windsor along with Port Huron. If anyone has any ETA's I would appreciated it. Looks like it will be a daylight transit for her in both the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers later on at some point today. Better get your cameras ready now!

As of 10:20 p.m. she cleared the Port Colborne Piers at 1922 and is due at CIP Long Point Central at 2215 hours or at 10:15 p.m. What would her ETA be then for Detroit from Long Point along with the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers? I am still thinking that she will be passing through in the daylight hopefully before evening and dark on December 7. Anyone with any ETA's on her would be very helpful and appreciative. Thank You.

As of 6:00 p.m. she is tied up at the R & P Coal Dock in Port Colborne, wharf 16, loading supplies by crane? Being serviced?

She arrived at Wharf 16 the R&P Coal Dock in Port Colborne at 1610 hours on December 6. Don't know what she is doing there but, that's the latest update on her so far from what I can gather.

Usually its 24hrs once they clesr Port Colborne to the Bluewater Bridge 18hrs to the Westcott.So she wil be through the Detroit and St clair rivers in daylight tomorrow unless she gets delayed.

Denny - my guess would be Detroit ETA around 11:00am Saturday, which would mean Port Huron ETA around 4:30pm.
Let's see what speed she can make on the open lake with no cargo.....
