Re: maumee
As for river names, it will have to be an Ojibway river name. The owner's mum was Ojibway, if I recall correctly, which explains the logo & the Ojibway River names. Compile a list of Ojibway language rivers, & you'll have your LLT/GRN name candidates.

Very interesting new info about the Sarah Spencer, I have for a long time thought she would be an ideal canidate for LLT to buy, but with this new information about how much work the Spencer would require it makes things even more interesting and complicated. I'm sure LLT could round up a tug but this goes a long way to explaining why the Spencer has sat idle for so long, perhaps unless LLT is willing to fix her up she will sit until she makes a one way trip to the scrappers.

Re: maumee
They would also need a new tug for the Spencer as the Jane Ann IV cannot be brought into American registry due to the Jones Act.
Re: maumee
The Sarah Spencer has an awful lot of work that needs to be done on her before she'll ever sail again. I personally am in possession of copied documents that show major structural issues in her bottom and wing ballast tanks that may end up costing several million dollars to properly fix throughout the length of cargo section. Currently, as I'm sure you know, she's laid up in Windsor. Her certification has been suspended by ABS pending the upgrades being completed accordingly. On the other hand, putting five million into the Spencer makes more sense than putting five million into the Maumee! Such a move would increase LLTs carrying capacity and ease the pressures to get CTC 1 ready for service, wouldn't it? However, she's Canadian and the Jones Act won't permit her transferance back in the US flag unless there's some clause allowing a former US registered ship back into US registration. It's going to be interesting, that's for sure.

Re: maumee
Look at the Tug Champlain she was Canadian and Italian I believe and then came back to US flag trade. Also there were several car ferries that went American/Canadian/American as well as US/Caribbean/US. I'm guessing either the Sarah Spencer is too much or is not for sale it seems like she would be the best match and a not nearly as much to refurbish her and a tug.Guest wrote:You can't reflag a ship that has been flagged in another country without an act of congress.

I will not miss the Maumee, she is beyond her time and ripe. I loaded her in Marblehead many times. When it got dark, you never knew the hatches and I begged the crew to paint the numbers on even offerring a can of paint.

If she were to replace the Maumee like some of us are speculating, I don't think you have to look beyond the two ships named Calumet for your answer.GHboatwatcher wrote:if all LLT vessels are named after rivers, (with the exeption of the peirson) what would they rename her if they brought her back to service? would they name her maumee if by then the original is gone? that is what they did with the calumets. so, anyone have any names suggested?

Re: maumee
She's a lousy grain boat. Built strictly for the ore trade. On top of all that, I personally know from connections I have at Inland Steel, the Ryerson family has and always had major say in what happens to the ELR!Mike H wrote:Would LLT have any intrest in the Ryerson if it were to become available?

Don't be so quick to count out the Maumee. It'll take at least a year to get the CTC up and running. All the plans have to be done, scheduling and order of all the materials and the time to complete the job. The Maumee Was scheduled for a 5 year so they did/do still the capacity. And her forward cabins wer painted this year so there is some interset in keeping her.

Re: maumee
If she comes out I would bet some stuff like radars, gps, other navigational equipment, and some basic furnishing would be transferred to the CTC from the Maumee, but I doubt anything major. As for a name I would throw in Macatawa for the Holland, MI area.

There was talk in the early 1980s for the John T. Hutchinson to receive the stern from the Saginaw Bay, but the plan was nixed by the Coast Guard.

Re: maumee
I would have to agree with you that it would be impractical to use the Maumee's after end. Among the other things you mentioned is also the fact that the Maumee has a depth of 32ft and the CTC is 35ft. Add into that the fact that the Maumee has a riveted hull that is 85 years old and the CTC is a welded hull and you have too many issues that make it a very poor option.

Re: maumee
Highly unlikely. When the stern of the Canadian Explorer was grafted onto the Canadian Transfer, it meant not only a complete motorship engine room, but also a more modern aft-end accommodation block. Grafting Maumee's stern onto the CTC#1 would give her a diesel engine to replace her original triple-expansion steam engine, but by the time the surgery is complete that diesel would be at least 47 years old, and hopelessly inefficient by modern standards. Not only that, but most of Maumee's auxiliaries are still the original 1929 steam equipment, with 14 years and a lot more miles on it than what's already on the CTC#1, and the same is true of her aft-end accommodations (although CTC#1 will need new furnishings). For the extra cost of doing the stern swap, they really wouldn't get much if any benefit. It would make much more sense to simply repower CTC#1 with a new diesel, like they have done with Cuyahoga, Saginaw, and now Michipicoten.Bruce G Muskegon wrote: Is there a chance that the stern of the Maumee will be cut off and reattached to the CTC1, as that would solve a re-engine of the CTC1 by removing her aft- end ? The Can. transfer has made a successful transition.

Re: maumee
I would guess any cutting of the stern would open the door for a conversion to tug/barge, and seeing how LLT seems to keep most things in one piece, seems unlikely for any cutting to be done. Until the company states their intentions, any guess is as good as the next, though.Bruce G Muskegon wrote:Is there a chance that the stern of the Maumee will be cut off and reattached to the CTC1, as that would solve a re-engine of the CTC1 by removing her aft- end ? I would think the scrapping of the Maumee would provide some usable equipment for the CTC No. 1, lowering some of the refurb. costs.

River names that are Native American does narrow the list! Lackawanna, Genesee, Menominee, and Kinnickinnic come to mind.
