Guest lounge aboard Roger Blough. Two full bedrooms, one on either side. Kitchenette and bar as well. Officer's Dining Hall still reserved for guests.

Just confirming that Trillium has no special "passenger" cabin. Extra cabins are available in case they are needed and these are similar to regular crew cabins (though some have bunks rather than a single bed). Also, there is an "owner's" cabin that is similar to an "officer's" cabin in size and furnishing (this is the most like a "passenger" cabin but isn't anything like what you used to see on the boats).

I would rate the passenger quarters on the American Fortitude (I was aboard as E. T. Weir) as nicer than either the Sykes or the Ryerson, both of whom I've made trips aboard as a passenger. Mike

That would explain alot of the the things they are doing and it reflects the impression I've gotten of them in the last couple of years.

I agree with you 100%. If Upper Lakes was still in existence you could be certain the steam turbines would still be running for years to come. Plenty other diesel ships in worse shape than the Quebecois, Montrealais and VW Scully of which I had the priviledge of sailing on. Diesel ships inheritently need a lot of spare parts due to break downs and winter overhauls. I put a combined 4 yrs on these ladies of the lakes and never had the turbine casings off. Speaks volumes for their reliability. RIP

I've read the Ryerson has exceptional guest quarters.
It seems I've been told that the CSL Trilliums have no guest quarters, and no elevator between decks.

The guest quarters on the Blough are bar none. They spend a couple mill on them. I'll try to find some photos. It is usually either the Blough or Gott that handle "guests" in the way you are describing.

The quarters on the Anderson aren't bad either. Why I didn't take any photos when I was with her I'll never know. The Block has some nice quarters with multiple rooms and a passenger deck. The Am Spirit has quarters similar to the Paul R. The Mesabi Miner has the same layout but it has been converted heavily and now has some exercise equipment where the viewing windows are.

I'll try to dig up some of mine on the Roger Blough. When I was on her we did have a few guests but I think they were family. The crew rooms on the Blough were also really nice, by far the nicest out of any ship I worked on.

Regarding Algoma, their last "flagship" used to carry passengers in that manner was the Algowest. Last I saw, the furniture in her former guest quarters is covered with sheets and the room is quite dusty, but you can tell it used to be nice back when she was a true flagship.

"Back In The Day", that is through the 1970s, many shipping companies - being very proud of their ships, and knowing how much goodwill could be created by inviting influential people aboard for a voyage - installed comfortable, even luxurious quarters on their ships for company "Guests". (Consider those on the Ryerson, Sykes, Courtney Burton, Edward B. Greene, John A. France Etc. Do the new Equinox or Trillium ships have such quarters?

Don't forget the Edmund Fitzgerald, from what I understand she had some of the finest interiors of any laker built.

I guess Algoma decided it was too much of a liability to carry passengers anymore.

The terms guest and/or passenger quarters are pretty much used interchangeably to describe the accommodations for non-crew members on the boats. But I believe that a passenger pays for passage on the boat while the guest enjoys the free hospitality due to being either a guest of the company or a member of an officer's family. However one considers it, those trips are priceless memories.

Unlikely for Equinox vessels, as Algoma's company policy no longer permits passengers. Perhaps some accommodation has been made for the family of crew members.
