Detroit's Snowiest Winters

Well Ed and everyone else that reads this, the snow totals for the Detroit area are about to increase even further this winter with more on the way believe it or not. Latest report and information I heard today at noon has us in the bullseye once again for snow and we are to get from 3-5 inches overnight Tuesday lasting into Wednesday. Right now Detroit is at 83.8 inches of snow for the 2013-14 winter and in second place alltime. The snowiest winter ever was in 1880-81 at 93.6 inches. If we get 5 inches then in the Detroit area that will put us about 5 inches short of the record with still a little bit of time left. This is off subject but, also heard that they have to "re-sod the baseball field at Comerica Park after last year's outdoor Hockey Game!" Good luck with that as the Tigers Home Opener is on March 31 and with all the snow right now there is no way they can have that field ready in time for the Home Opener. I guess time will tell but, can't wait until Spring and to see the ships moving again and Tiger Baseball as I can smell the Ballpark Franks cooking already. Yummy as I am ready for one and to be sitting outdoors again.

No way as I want to hear them talk about how close we came to the record and missed it this year. Then, somewhere down the road in a few years we could try and beat the record but not now and definitely not this year. Mother Nature can stop the snow and the cold anytime. BTW if you want to see us break the record ok fine but, at least stop with the cold part as we don't need to see anymore records on the frigid temperatures. That part the cold has gone on and lasted far too long this winter as most everyone has said that I've talked to.

Denny -We have come way too far to let the record get away now. Just 2-3 more good snow storms and the record is ours !

Ed we don't need to crank up the snow machine anytime soon and haven't we had enough of this ugly white stuff this winter? I know I have and we don't need to tie or even break the record for snow this year in light of what I said in an earlier post this week. Now I just want to see the snow and especially the cold part of this winter end. I would like to see more sunshine and warmer days much warmer then we have been having lately. I think we are long overdue as I am sure you agree and it is time to "Spring Forward and not Fall Backward!" Both the Groundhog Phil and Mother Nature need to get with it here soon and start to Spring Forward. Maybe with the time change coming this weekend it will happen in the next week or so. Man let's hope so as I am ready for Spring. Enough snow and cold already!

Some Very long faces around here the last few days. No snow since 3-1-14 ! We have to get the snow machine cranked up if we're going to beat the record.

Latest report has us now at 83.8 inches and climbing! Yeah Baby I want to see us break the record. Some other interesting stats on this winter as well, this is our 8th coldest winter on record and also it has been the coldest winter we've had in 35 years believe it or not. They also mentioned awhile ago on the news about a week or so back, that the Detroit Metro area has been one of the hardest hit areas this winter so far in the entire country! I guess we can't complain too much as just look what the East Coast has been getting lately? Now there's a group for you that I am sure will definitely be glad to see Spring get here as they get dumped on sometimes harder than we do. The old saying goes "It could always be worse!"

We're going to get more snow Tuesday ( 3-4-'14 ). Only 10 inches now from breaking the record here in Detroit. Even money on all bets to beat the record !

We are now officially over 80 inches of snow in the Detroit area for the winter 2013-14. For the month of February the average air temperature was around 19 degrees give or take as we did not see too many days above freezing. Also heard yesterday on the news that we had 60 straight days of at least one inch or more of snow on the ground. Saw on the Weather Channel's website also that the long-range prediction for March is temperature well below normal for our area. So, far they may be right believe it or not with no major warm up in sight in the next 7-10 days here in the Detroit area. When I see pictures from Florida and other sunny areas of the U.S. now, I turn the station as I don't want to see any of that stuff as it just makes me sick! Guess we just need to be patient and have patience as Spring will get here eventually. As for the record of 93.6 inches and the all-time snowiest winter I say "Why not let's tie it or even break it as we are now about 10 or so inches away from it!" At least it will give all these weather people something to say and talk about if they haven't already this year and winter.

Metro Detroit got 4 more inches of white stuff last night ( 3-1-14 ). Were going for the record !

Latest reports are now saying that this is the second snowiest winter on record for the Detroit area at 79.2 inches and rising and we are supposed to get 1-3 inches added to that this weekend from Saturday through Monday. Right now in my area the current air temperature is -8 degrees. It is supposed to be near freezing on Saturday and then turning colder again with no major warm up in sight next week. We have 20 days now until Spring and I have even heard people say "that the red robins are still hanging around believe it or not!" The all-time snowiest winter ever recorded for the Detroit area was in 1880-81 at 93.6 inches and I sure hope we don't pass that total this winter. Time will tell I guess.

Latest reports on WXYZ TV Channel 7 here in Detroit believe it or not has the updated weather information. We are now tied here for the "second snowiest winter all-time at 78.9 inches the same as what the winter of 1925-26 was as well." The all-time snowiest winter in Detroit was in 1880-81 at 93.6 inches. We are now just 15 inches away from tying the record. As much as I hate to say it we may just do that as this weekend they are saying "a big storm is on its way with lots of measurable snow." Right now they are not saying yet just how much snow but, it doesn't sound good to be honest. Well, its March and they don't call it "March Madness" for nothing! We have gotten some of our biggest snowfalls in the month of March. Well there are only 22 days left until Spring! Where are they gonna put more snow? The snow piles look like mountains in the parking lots and they don't want to haul it out for some reason making it dangerous to see and drive around.

The Chicago Weather Center of WGN-TV is projecting temperatures well below normal for the next 11-15 days, along with the potential for significant snow at the end of the week. So far 79% of the days of this winter have been below normal.

For both middlerouge and Dan McNeil regarding the weather topic, if you go to WXYZ Channel 7 website here in Detroit they are the only station that lists and shows now a 14-Day forecast both on the TV and the internet. They never did it on TV until recently showing 14 days ahead. I don't see how anybody can tell 14 days out on the weather let alone predict what today or tomorrow will be like? My Dad always used to say that "If you want to know what the weather is like, just go and step outside and you will see for yourself!" Heck us boatnerds can predict the weather sometimes better than those clowns can!

Denny, they are also giving what MILE road the storms edge will be ...... like 12 mile and North, not 11 or 13 mile.........

Where did you hear and get that information from as they are not saying anything here in the Detroit area so far at least? I never try to go on a "long-range forecast as they can't predict that far out in advance." My main concern for the weather is the current day along with overnight and the next day. They might be able to tell what it will be for the next 2-3 days but, beyond that I never listen to those forecasts. With March around the corner, anything is possible for the weather. In the past though, the Detroit area has seen some of its "biggest snow storms in March and the scary part is any ice storms as well." March is a freaky month around here for weather so, you can get just about anything in March.

Anyone see next weeks forecast for, well, everyone east of the mississpi river? Big winter storm coming. Preliminary forecasts call for snow storms, ice storms, and flooding. That's mother nature doing what she does best

They said on WXYZ Channel 7 here in Detroit that it was either on Sunday or Monday that it was the first day in February that we did not have any precipitation and was the first dry day we have had all month long. This week the "Polar Vortex is back once again and extreme cold is with it as well." They also gave a long-range out look from March-June and temperatures are expected to be below normal and colder than average. My family and I on Sunday all said "We just can't remember so much wind during a winter as we have sure had lots of cold windy and breezy days this winter!"

In Chicago, we have officially had the 3rd coldest winter in the weather records, and given the snow forecast this week, we should hit the fourth snowiest winter, and we still have all of March to go. Closing in on the all-time record for below zero days as well, along with the 5th longest streak of days with snow cover. Interesting winter so far.
