Alex, you are correct—I checked the date on the slide and it is indeed 1961! Well spotted!

I am also impressed that you and others managed to ID the Cedarville. I didn't think an ID of the second ship was possible (tiny image, no visible stack). I'd be curious to know what clues you spotted to convince you of her identity.

Two other details I find interesting:

a) the large tank farm on the Canadian side.

b) the auto ferry crossing in front of the Ford. So pre-bridge (October 1962)

Hi Dan, as the others have posted, the freighter leaving the first lock is the Henry Ford II. The photo would have been taken 1961 or shortly after because of the early stages of rebuilding the second lock are in progress. The self-unloader in the background is the Cedarville that sank in 1965.

Definitely Cedarville in the background.

It is the Henry Ford II. In the background it appears to be the Cedarville shortly following its conversion to a self-unloader in 1957. If the picture was taken in 1958 it cannot be the Calcite II as it was not converted until 1961.

Can anyone identify this vessel? Shot at the Soo around 1958 I believe.
