Detroit's Snowiest Winters

I agree Shirley and as for ice, that is another story as I am sure most of us will never forget this ice season on the Great Lakes!

I think (hope) our snows are a thing of the past down here in southwestern OH, but the temp keeps jumping up and down. Need to get my grass cut this weekend. This has definitely been one winter we won't soon forget!

Enough already with the snow and winter Ed as Winter is over here in Michigan and just look at the weather for the weekend and next week! It supposed to be back up into the 60's by Easter and next week back into the 50's and 60's. Our average high now is at 60 degrees and the low at night is about 40. Mother Nature gave us one last final blow this week when we broke the snow total record at 94.8 inches. So, point is Winter is done in my books and now it is on to Spring and Finally! Anyone that wants more winter, snow and cold I say go either up north, to Alaska or the North and South Poles LOL! Most everyone you talk to all say that they have seen enough winter, snow and cold and want to get on to Spring!

It's not over yet ! Snow records for the year go from July to July. We may just keep on counting !

Well it's official now and we did it finally! If you haven't heard yet we have now set the all-time snowiest winter season total of snow with 94.8 inches passing the previous record of 93.6 inches set in 1880-81. My question now is what's next? We finally got the all-time snowiest winter on record so what other records for weather is there to break? I say what the heck why not get the coldest summer record we've ever had! Surely we have had some cool summers in the past as I remember 1992 being a cool one and 2009 also being cool and not too warm and hot. We've had a spell now of warm summers lately so, let's start with having a run of some cool and cold ones for a change. I don't mind the warm summers but, hate the humidity part with a passion. Anyone have any thoughts on any weather records to break yet this year?

Weatherman said we could get up to 3 inches of snow tonight in the metro Detroit area. All we need is 2 more inches to beat the all-time record. Let's set the record !

Wow that is some list Guest from Toledo that you saw and heard from the Weather Channel's website. I would have thought that the Detroit area at least would have made the top of the list that considering we've had the second snowiest winter and one of the coldest winters in recent memory. Looking at the cities on the list, I am not surprised to see Toledo along with places such as Chicago and Green Bay make the list. I am also not surprised to see Duluth/Superior make the top ten either as they have had just as harsh of a winter as the rest of us. A few other port cities that did not make the list I see were Cleveland and Milwaukee as I am sure they have had it as rough as we have including Buffalo also. It looks like we may not break the record for snow here in Detroit afterall this winter and come up just short. So far so good as far as "No major snowstorms expected for Detroit!" However, up on the East Coast they are expecting to get nailed next week.

The Weather Channel announced Friday that Toledo’s winter of 2013-14 has been the worst of any major city in the United States this year. The Weather Channel ranks cities with populations of at least 100,000 for its annual list of 10 U.S. cities with the nastiest winter weather. The other port cities on this list are Chicago at #2, Detroit at #3, Duluth/Superior at #8, and Green Bay at #9. There are probably Great Lake ports with even worse weather that didn’t make the list because population is less than 100,000.

Detroit's official snow records stand as recorded regardless of location or elevation. The official recording was taken at 4 different locations since 1880 but, old records still stand today. In around 1934 the measurement was taken at the Detroit City airport and were recorded as official measurements. Once recorded these are official records.

My Dad does remember that City Air port was used as a recording site, I mentioned the Griswald and Congress site cause that is where the site was for recording the record we are now approaching, (yr. 1880-1) yes a record stands no matter what the elevation was or is. that was why it would be nice to set the record, (wiping out the old one from Down Town) at a site that appears to be the one we will use from now, & going forward. (all official records have a note as to where the record was taken)_ but the average folk only speak of "The Record" they don't speak of the asterisk. Those were good points that Denny brought up.

Follow up to my quote above. There is an elevation difference between Down Town Detroit and Metro Air port, which will make a difference between comparing records.

The official word from WDIV here in Detroit is that we are just 3 inches from the record snow fall of 1880-1881. WOW - now I know we can beat that record with a little effort.

The approaching storm even has a name -- Vulcan storm ! Very impressive. I smell a new snow record.

Just heard the weather forecast for tonight and Wednesday. 6-8 more inches of the white stuff for the Detroit area. Just what we needed ! The record is now within sight. With a little luck that record should be ours by Saint Patty's day.
