New Boats

CSL found itself in the same situation in the late 90's and the early 2000's when some of their boats built in the mid to late 70's arrived at the 25 yr mark in their respective careers. They opted to build new forebodiies and retain the stern sections of the H.M. Griffith/Louis Demarais/J W McGiffin/Jean Parisien.
The new forebodies were Seaway Max size and incorporated some of the newest technology in self unloading at a cost that was substantially less than if they had had to build a whole new boat, stem to stern.
An interesting side note is on the American side, the H Lee White, John J Boland and American Mariner were built in the same time period and are still plugging along in basically their original configurations.

They have the newest in the fleet because they haul massive amounts of salt, they send their boats into the Lower St. Lawrence where saltwater gets in their Ballast tanks, & they build them (since the 70s) as cheap as possible. They’re made to last about 30 years & they’re pretty well worn out by then from all the hard running they do with them.

This company sure seems to send a lot of ships to the scrappers. Is it because of them all hauling salt or lack of proper maintenance.

No they are investing in their fleet, purchasing new vessels. In with the new, out with the old. I think they have more new vessels than any other fleet in the Great Lakes (US or Canada) except for perhaps Fednav.

Age, they are past their designed life spans.

Rumour has it that the wood is finished but the jackman one more season possibly and yes they are in that bad of shape won’t pass inspections unless major dollars are spent they have been patching them up enough for a few seasons now,until the new ships arrive

If the new builds aren't going to arrive until 2020, why are they retiring the Algowood and Jackman now ? Are they in such bad shape that they couldn't sail another season ? TIA

The Algoma Endurance (more recently referred to by Algoma as the Algoma Intrepid) was among the cancelled orders in Croatia. The Algoma Conveyor is undergoing completion in China. They only cancelled the Croatia orders so the Conveyor should be joining the fleet sometime in 2019.

I am not 100% certain but, regarding the cancelled contracts back in the Fall to be exact October of 2018, wasn't Algoma Endurance part of the cancelled contracts? At least I thought I heard that one being mentioned at the time. Sorry if I am wrong on my news.

Just trying to make sure my thinking is correct. Since Algoma cancelled their contracts for the new builds, where does that leave the status of the Algoma Endurance and Algoma Conveyor? I assumed they were part of that deal and so won't be arriving on the Lakes, at least not yet. Or will they be delivered as originally planned?

Also does anyone know when VanEnkevort will be taking delivery of their new barge?
