Do you think that ship leaving Duluth could be Algocape?

I have no idea what ship was leaving Duluth, but think the St. Clair was entering. Anybody know what the ship is that's leaving? Thanks.

A busy anchorage outside the Duluth piers during the fall grain rush was a common occurrence from the 1960s - early 2000s. It would not be unusual for there to be stretches lasting for weeks when there would never be less than three or four vessels out there waiting their turn for grain berths. I remember several occasions during the last real busy seasons (1998 and 1999) where there were as many as 12 or 13 ships out there at once.

Business isn't nearly as busy right now as it was pre-2003 (the year grain tonnage started to fall off dramatically), but boats are stacking up outside the harbor because so far there are really only two grain terminals in the export business this year as opposed to the 4 - 6 that were usually in on the action pre-2007 (the year that two big terminals in Duluth were purchased by commodities-trading hedge funds and taken out of the ship loading business).

Best guess is they are waiting for dock space to open up. The gain trade has been brisk this year and there are more boats than grain docks. That infomation was available in recent News Channel postings on this site. I suggest you chech it out for the whole story.

I noticed earlier that there are a lot of boats in the lake just outside the Duluth harbor. Why?
