All the tall ships were in Duluth last summer.
A couple of them were there just this last weekend.
Pretty cool to look at!

Hi Cleveland,
The river class boats are the ones with several rudders and have thrusters for and aft. Many were made just for the Cuyahoga River. They need no assistance whatsoever.

The Calumet and Cuyahoga sail up river without assistance but need it backing down. I finally caught the Calumet backing down with a tug the other day:
PANA2439.JPG
The Algoma class I refer to is informal. I merely refer to the Algoma boats that navigate this river with a forward pilot house that are generally 600+' and around 20+K ton capacity. They always use two tugs in and out. That's all.

Hi MN,
The photo with the Tall Ship activity was from the 2006 Tall Ships Challenge in Cleveland. It was a great event that was pleasing to the eye. I remember Heraldo Rivera showed up and refused to pay for admission to the point he scoffed at the checkpoint and looked down his nose at folks. He was a line jumper too. I was impressed .
Here is one photo from the 2003 Tall Ships event.

The Buffalo is on the the river now.

There was a storm that came through the area early yesterday morning that carried lots of rain. The storm dropped up to 3.5 inches in Cleveland and almost 5 inches in the Akron-Canton areas. The debris is still coming down the river. Lots of localized flooding. We golfed in the high humidity yesterday at Coppertop. I'll bet I lost 5 lbs.

I don't recall hearing of the Algoma Class before, what are the general dimensions/tonnage of the Algoma class?
Algoma class refers to vessels like the Algorail, Algoway and Algoma Transfer.

Again, great pics Beecher! What is going on in the last pic of all the tall sailing boats? Some kind of a water front activity?
The wrecking crews did quick work of the cold storage building!

There was a boat whistle on the river early this morning. I later saw a tug returning from up river. I bet it was not the Calumet! Ha!

Buffalo is currently in port. Algoma Transfer used Iowa and Illinois as the Rhode Island is currently stationed in Ashtabula.

Hi MN,
Oh yes they run boats up this federal channel. The river class boats sail this river like they are on rails. The others like the Algoma class use tugs from what I observe. The Cuyahoga uses one tug. The recent visit from the Algoma Transport used two. I think they were the Iowa and the Rhode Island.

I have observed the Calumet to be in need of a tug at times based on the photos and descriptions like the ones I have posted here. I see a boat coming and I snap off a few photos and go back to what I was doing. When I see the Calumet, I turn into a NASCAR spectator...lol.

I see a river class boat a few miles out sailing in. It looks like the Sam Laud or the Buffalo.

Thanks for the great pics Beecher.
Looking at the pics of the Calumet, it's hard to believe they run that large of a boat up such a small waterway! Wind from the beam must really play hell with the boats trying to get through there.

Now to the Calumet. She seems to have a little trouble navigating this skinny, crooked Cuyahoga River in the Crooked Cuyahoga County.

I saw a few boats this week when I was without a camera. I believe they were the American Spirit & Algosar.

The Appledore IV is here too.

I did see some tug barge activity:

Dorothy Ann / Pathfinder have been in and out this week. She is unloading stone on the river between the Innerbelt Bridge and the Lorain Carnegie Bridge in this picture. (Railroad too)
PANA2237.JPG
The 50+ year old Innerbelt Bridge is of the same engineering, design, and age as the one that collapsed in Minnesota. It is to be replaced by two bridges. Construction on the first one has started. They are to build it amoung the piles of stone and coal. They are also bringing down the huge cold storage building shown partially razed here:
PANA2238.JPG
It is right over the river and the valley walls are unstable so they can't blow it up like they wanted. They are clawing at it from the other side of this view. The other side looks like a war zone.
PANA2209.JPG
PANA2225.JPG
PANA2171.JPG
The golf courses have dried out. A pretty good thunderboomer came through here last night with winds up to 75mph. I hear there are still folks that are without power.

I have obtained a photo of the next dirty rat to be indicted in the ongoing RICO case from a reliable source. He is said to be spreading imported substances all over the area. He is also believed to be very vocal and blends in well with all the politicians.

Have a safe Fourth of July

Hi Cleveland,
The station is a gem of a structure. I would love to get my hands on it with capital to play with.

Hi Les,
I hear the engine room misses you too. I also hear the NFL lockout is nearing an end. Staff vacations have been suspended for some teams and they have to report on July 1st. I hope the players are soon to follow. I am bummed at the Browns scedule because it does not bring any great lakes area teams & their creepy Lions, Bears, Vikings, & Packers fans to town to mess with.

I was on the bike when I saw a tug barge in the harbor. I think it was the Olive L Moore and the Lewis J Kuber.

I saw a boom sticking up amoung the ore piles at Whiskey Island and took a photo:
PANA2147.JPG
St Mary's Cement showed tonight too.

The building in question is indeed the former B&O station. Originally it was a passenger station then it became a freight station and then it became a nothing of a station (i.e. disused).

Hi, Beecher.

We are about settled in to the new place, so we can start thinking about coming down (I miss the engine room).

Hopefully, we will be down in the near future. Since I don't druve any more, it is up to the better half if she feels up to driving.

Hey Les-Paul,
(LOL)
I found a link for a quick update as to the owner of the station & its plans that have stalled for this building:
http://clevelandneighborhoods.blogspot. ... chive.html

The Buffalo was unloading stone on the river this morning and departed around 9am.

We had some lightning strikes hit downtown this morning too.

Thanks Les and Beecher. I'm not surprised that it is a railroad station. They are usually the prettiest buildings.
