I can only speak from personal experience based on 'non-marine' damage claims. The more 2nd and 3rd party entities involved in a settlement will only serve to postpone the repair work. Meanwhile, the damaged property will sit in limbo. While everyone is pointing fingers, the primary insurance company will only allow payment for necessary temporary measures in an attempt to keep the fire damage from causing additional claims.

Maybe someone with marine insurance knowledge can shed some light on this?

Sadly, based on the latest reports of extensive damage, all this may be a moot point for a 73 year old.

From Green Bay Press Gazette.

The most extensive damage was found near the electrical control area, the steering gear room, and a storage room/paint locker, Dietman said. All these areas are located near the stern of the ship.

The dining room and the galley sustained “excessive damage” and the ship’s stateroom was “gutted,” he said.

If you're referring strictly to a lakes built ship, these two have a 1943 build date (2015 Know Your Ships) but the Lee A. Tregurtha/USS Chiwawa (AO-68), was built in 1942.[/quote]

As for next oldest lake built boat to the Alpena, the Manistee.

I don't believe Lower Lakes/LLT has anything to do with the Alpena. She is run by Inland Lakes Management/ILM. Anyhow, my fear would be the "B" word - barging. Hopefully not! If it were out of service for awhile it would be interesting to see the Iglehart or Townsend out and about again.

I will echo what maney have said already, I also hope and pray this isn't the end for her. Shes always been a favorite of mine. I'm thankful and glad to hear that there were no injuries with this fire. Just curious if her owners do indeed repair her but the repairs last a extended period of time is it possible the Townsend or the Iglehart could be fit out to carry her cargos till she's ready to go again? Would they need a 5yr survey before being activated since both have been in long-term layup? Thanks for any information.

I am hoping and keeping my fingers crossed and praying that the damage is not severe enough to keep her out of action or to end her career! Have not seen her out along the St. Clair River since 2013 and would love to see her sail again. Let's all hope that she will be back with us next season and yes I agree with one of the earlier posts that LLT has the slogan "Don't Give Up The Ship!" Therefore, I am not about to give up on the Alpena just yet as she still has plenty of life in that Classy 'Ole Girl and I am sure she will be back sailing again next season. Also, I love that steam whistle!

Fingers crossed on them fixing the old girl up. It would be a shame to lose her this way.

The only thing close to her capacity would be the JAW Iglehart. I have to presume though that unless the engine room was completely destroyed, she will be repaired and will be out and about next year

So, per the news conference it was the aft accommodations and not the engine room. That may be somewhat good news. The heavy damage isn't good news but as is the motto of Lower Lakes "Don't Give Up The Ship."

Hopefully they'll redo the accommodations and she'll be back out.

As for the next oldest operating vessel I believe it's the Mississiagi. Either her or the Cuyahoga.

I hate to say this and not sound optimistic for her and her future however, currently she is the oldest vessel operating right now on the Great Lakes. Who would next be in line after the Alpena as far as the Oldest Operating Vessel on the Great Lakes currently not of course counting any conversions or tug/barge conversions as well?

That's what I was and am afraid of too - that the damage will be so severe they'll just write her off instead of spending money on repairs.

One media site (WBAY) reports things as "winding down", but your description is anything but "winding down". Doesn't sound good at all.

I hope she comes through this ok.
